S.W. Calgary Independence Militia

At age-18, I was embedded as a Milk Man – working the Palm Daries N.E. International Avenue route.

Those were different times.

We were young and idealistic. (i.e. easily brainwashed.)

Don’t try to paint the S.W.C.I.M. as racist. We had plenty of Jewish comrades and even one Pakistani family in our quadrant, just as eager to protect property values.

It was economics. That’s all.

We weren’t anti-immigration, but rather wanted it regulated. Our traditional sources of low cost, unskilled labour were slaving well, thank-you very much: Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Edmonton.

Today almost anybody can live in S.W. Calgary.

And milkmen are obsolete. 🙂

Brittany (S. Pierce) is played by Heather Morris.

… Her big break came in 2007 via Beyoncé. Morris was one of Beyoncé’s backup dancers on The Beyoncé Experience world tour …

Morris was taking acting classes and actively pursuing an acting career when she was asked … to teach the choreography for Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” dance to the Glee actors. At the same time, the show was looking for a third cheerleader, and Morris ended up landing the role of Brittany.

Initially a background character who hardly ever spoke, the role grew as writers discovered Morris had a gift for delivering one-liners …

arrived Tokyo

After too many hours to count, and 6 movies (all good), I’m safely installed in a central Tokyo hostel.

It’s easy to get here from the airport. Only 90min 🙂 by train and subway. Simple.

Blue skies. No sign of a typhoon.

in praise of internet sharing

Despite fear mongering and pragmatic cautioning, people are sharing online like there’s no tomorrow.

I’m a big fan of journalism professor / internet pundit Jeff Jarvis, author of What Would Google Do?

His newest publication is Public Parts, the book. It touts the societal benefits of sharing:

… A visionary and optimistic thinker examines the tension between privacy and publicness that is transforming how we form communities, create identities, do business, and live our lives.

Thanks to the internet, we now live—more and more—in public. More than 750 million people (and half of all Americans) use Facebook, where we share a billion times a day. The collective voice of Twitter echoes instantly 100 million times daily, from Tahrir Square to the Mall of America, on subjects that range from democratic reform to unfolding natural disasters to celebrity gossip. New tools let us share our photos, videos, purchases, knowledge, friendships, locations, and lives. …
