iPod phone before Christmas?

One analyst gives a 75% chance that we’ll seen an iPhone in the next 12 months.

Why can’t Microsoft do anything right?

Are you running 5-year-old Windows XP on your computer?

Microsoft just annouced the consumer release of the new operating system, dubbed Vista, is delayed until January 2007. Just to miss Christmas.

There have been no fewer than four Mac OS X releases since Windows XP was launched, and each one was a big improvement.

With all the billions in the Microsoft piggy bank, why are they so hopeless at almost everything?

Seriously, Windows users should switch to Apple or Linux. You can buy a Mac mini for US$499 (street price).

Newsvine – When do Vista delays become disdain for the customer?

blog – WordPress 2.0 not yet ready

This blog uses WordPress 1.5x

I was looking forward to upgrading to 2.0x which should allow easier posting of video clips and other important improvements.

Unfortunately 2.0, so far, seems to be a bit of a disaster.

Reasons to not upgrade to WordPress 2.0 from 1.5.2

Oops, perhaps I blogged too soon. Seems WordPress 2.0.2 is already out and I will attempt the upgrade … soonish. WordPress called it a “Security Update” but several bugfixes were of more value to me.

NOTE – I finally did update. No major problems. The new widgets feature won me over.

travelogue – Daytona Beach, Florida

I drove by the International Speedway. It’s HUGE! Daytona is the Birthplace of Speed.

Then had lunch at famous Daytona Beach.

Daytona Beach

There was an indecent Spring Break bikini crowd around, but the bigger news was Daytona Bike Week which had ended just before I arrived.

If you are thinking of buying a Harley and driving down next year, be sobered by the death count: 21 motorcycle related deaths over 10 days. The previous high of 15 Bike Week fatalities was set in 2000.

The law requiring motorcycle riders in Florida to wear protective helmets was repealed in 2000. Most victims this year were not wearing helmets.

The second largest world gathering of motorcycle fanatics I much prefer — Sturgis in South Dakota, near Mt. Rushmore. I would be happy to join you in a Sturgis pilgrimage!

music – Arctic Monkeys

monkeyThe latest over-hyped British invasion sensation?

I like them, actually. Simple, straight-forward pop rock.

They remind me a little of White Stripes. Smart lyrics. Interesting vocals.

They have a sense of humour.

And I like that they avoided the big labels — generating a buzz by creative use of the internet.

Thumbs up. I wish I had seen them play SXSW in Austin.

Worst American airline?

graphThe big American airlines are likely doomed to extinction. It may be impossible to run a full-service national airline in the USA.

I flew American Airlines recently and concur that their service is crappy. American flys more unhappy passengers than anyone else.

Most annoyingly, American (and most airlines) are adding unexpected fees to delay the inevitable bankruptcy.

Baggage restrictions have been tightened supposedly because of fuel savings if we take less luggage.

On American you can take 2 bags each weighing up to 50lbs. If you check only 1 bag weighing 55lbs they immediately want you to pay a surcharge. If you resist in anyway (fuss with the bag for a minute) they give up on the extra fee. This scenario happened to me on all 3 AA flights.

Airlines ignore their luggage rules as they ignore their carry-on limits. It’s just another way to get you to pony up more cash.

I have little respect for big airlines. The sooner they are displaced by leaner upstarts, the better.

With so many big airlines suffering, will you? – Sep. 15, 2005
