a Tim Hortons miracle

I love the Tim Hortons coffee franchise as does most everyone:

Canadian Business magazine has twice named Tim Hortons as the best-managed brand in Canada (in 2004 and 2005).

But I often pass them by as they are simply too crowded in Calgary. Line-ups of 25 caffeine addicts are not unusual.

Then, a miracle.

The newest franchise opened in Calgary over Easter. No street signage had yet been mounted.

I had a double double, the Sun and 11 employees to myself in an empty cafe.

I am a Tim Horton’s regular. I am always impressed by their consistency, quality and the pleasantness of the staff.

This is in contrast to McDonald’s, which I used to feel the same about, but in the past few years, I have been less and less impressed. More depressed? Frequently slow, sandwiches slapped together, often cold. The ones staffed by senior citizens are better, but the ones with young teenagers more interested in hanging out together are the worst. These seem to be more and more common. I thing that McDonald’s management is losing touch with what is happening at the lower levels.
