    I remember her. She used to pace the floor on winter afternoons, hair matted, flannel pyjama shirt buttoned crookedly, the toe of one sock dragging behind her, mumbling lists of seven-letter words, trying to keep them in alphabetical order.
    Then one night someone showed her how to play chess, and she was lost forever…
