On paper, with that cast, this series must have looked fantastic.

Hank Stuever of The Washington Post gave it a generally positive review, praising the performances, and wrote, “There is something still lugubrious and overwrought about True Detective, but there’s also a mesmerizing style to it — it’s imperfect, but well made.”[ …

Many who loved season 1 were critical of season 2. Too dark. Too confusing. A “self-serious mess“.

It tried too hard to be edgy, cool.

It needed some humour. Even one good character.

Still, I recommend True Detective (season 2). And look forward to season 3.
