greatest “athlete” in history?

Tiger reiterates that he believes he’s capable of sweeping the Grand Slam events, and he’s gearing up for the Masters now.

LA Times

Certainly you MUST agree he is the greatest athlete psychologically in history. Physically, obviously, golf does not rank in toughness. (Regardless of what USA Today thinks.)

Calgary Flames back into playoffs

barney-flames.jpgHow does a fan like me have any confidence at all going into the playoffs?

Marian Gaborik scored twice in the third period to boost Minnesota over the Flames, 3-1, as the Wild captured their first-ever Northwest Division title.

Despite the loss, Calgary still clinched a playoff spot as Vancouver was eliminated from postseason contention later on Thursday following a 2-1 home loss to Edmonton. …

Calgary is in seventh place in the West with 92 points, one ahead of Nashville, which won at home against St. Louis on Thursday. The Flames have one game remaining – versus the Canucks on Saturday, while the Predators finish at Chicago on Friday. However, the Flames will go to Vancouver knowing they have secured a postseason berth. That’s because Vancouver has 88 points with one game remaining.

Daymond Langkow had the lone goal for the Flames, losers in three of their last four games. …

Iginla should win the Hart trophy

He’s the most complete player of the contenders so far this season. And he should have won the Hart in 2002.

Jarome Iginla is hockey’s best player as we nudge the unofficial halfway mark of the season.

Halfway Hardware is really no hardware at all, of course. But it does set a front-runner for others to pursue. And in the Hart Trophy chase, they’re all chasing Jarome.

The man doesn’t just dominate games now. He dictates them. They bend to his will. …

Saskatchewan wins Grey Cup

stu-riders.jpgFanatic supporters from both sides wore their colours with pride, but it was clear from the sea of green in the stands that Winnipeg fans were a little outnumbered.

“We’re outnumbered about 100 to one,” said Koobie Kid, 52, whose fan outfit included wearing a shrink-wrapped sausage – a so-called “Winnipeg Stetson” – around his neck.

Then another drove of Roughriders fans passed and Kid, who’s attended 26 Grey Cups by his count, recalculated the odds.

“That’s modest. Might be 500 to one.

In the end, the Roughriders beat the Bombers 23-19.

Roughriders to win the Grey Cup

I still bleed green, a little, from 10yrs living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Those lovable losers, the Regina Roughriders have only won the league’s Grey Cup championship twice, in 1966 and 1989.

I’m calling on them to take it again this year.

Trivia – This team officially changed their name to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1948. The formation of what became the CFL, later, brought them into the same league as the similarly named, but differently spelled, Ottawa Rough Riders. Hilarious.

what NIKE does right

On the fantastic This American Life audiocast I was reminded of the story of how a local kid, Luis Da Silva, was made a TV superstar by NIKE.

He stole the show on this series of commercials from about 6yrs back featuring basketball professionals.

NIKE products are good — but their advertising has been the secret to making the company #1.

Kiprusoff happy to remain a Flame

Thank God.

That’s 6 more years I can stay interested in professional hockey in my town.

In an era where teams trade away their best players too easily, Calgary has avoided that mistake.

Less than 24 hours after signing a six-year, $35 million contract extension with the Calgary Flames, Miikka Kiprusoff helped lead his team to a commanding 5-1 victory over the Nashville Predators.

Kiprusoff stopped 39 of 40 shots during Tuesday night’s match-up. He came up huge durng a five-on-three in the second period where he stopped several shots and made sure that the Predators couldn’t use the big power play as momentum shift in the game.

After the game, a smiling Kiprusoff told the media he was extremely pleased with the contract extension.

“It’s good for me and Flames. I can’t ask for more.”

He credited the fans for one the reasons he wanted to stay in Calgary.

Tiger Looking For More Competitive Golf Tour

UPDATE – Mike Weir came back to beat Tiger this weekend.

ATLANTA—Following his dominating performance at this year’s Tour Championship, in which he not only ran free of the field with an overpowering eight-shot victory but also took home the first ever FedEx Cup Championship, 13-time major winner Tiger Woods told reporters Sunday that he is looking to participate in a more competitive golf tour during the 2008 season. “Don’t get me wrong—I love to play golf, I love to win, and I’ve loved the time I’ve spent on the PGA Tour, but winning this easily isn’t making me any better,” said Woods, … “It’s not about the money, as I’ll play for free if I know I’m being pushed to even half of my ability.” Woods added that he would consider playing certain PGA Tour events next year if Commissioner Tim Finchem allows him to spot the field 10 strokes, play at night, and use only a single golf ball and a 2-iron.

Rugby World Cup – Go All Blacks!

I’m following the World Cup hosted in France during September and October, 2007.

The Rugby World Cup is the premier international rugby union competition. … The inaugural tournament was held in 1987, hosted by both Australia and New Zealand, and is now contested every four years.

The winners are awarded the William Webb Ellis Cup, named after the Rugby School pupil credited with the game’s invention. The tournament is one of the largest international sporting competitions in the world. The title of world champion is currently held by England, who won the 2003 tournament held in Australia.

The next World Cup will go to New Zealand in 2011. I’d love to get there. The Kiwis are #2 all time on the World Cup results list but everybody knows they should be #1.
