Many Canadians are asleep while the ISPs plot a cash grab.

I am a little surprised at all the fuss. I have had a metered connection for the past 15 years with Shaw. I paid for, and got, a service with a limit that started at about 30 Gig a month, which eventually was upped by Shaw to 60 Gig a month. I was a good little client, and stayed below my limit almost always… Getting one email slap on the wrist, when their reporting software lagged 4 days behind my use. I then opted to pay more and get 100 Gig a month. They also gave me a faster connection, but it is the additional 40 Gig that I need.

I am not happy that they are going to bill me a stupidly high extra charge for excess usage. I expect to be able to remain below my limits, although I hate having to waste the time monitoring my usage.

I do think that a lot of people who plan to stream hidef video are going to bump up against their limits a lot of the time. And I agree that it is just a money grab, along with a token “we are doing our best to throttle internet piracy”.

And when do we get our blank media surcharge back? Did this ever do anything?

  2. I don’t mind paying for straight Gigs, either.

That’s not what the ISPs have in mind, though.

They want to start making you pay extra for Netflix, for Amazon streaming, etc.

All regardless of the number of Gigs.

… At least that’s what the critics fear.

The fact that they LIE all the time about the reasons for the cash grab adds insult to potential injury.

  3. The CRTC approved Bell’s request.

But it sounds like Tony Clement, the minister, will overrule. If he does, I’ll be happy.

I love it when politicians actually LISTEN to voters.
