amazing new buildings in China

With the Olympics just less than one year to go, China is on a building-spree in Beijing and Shanghai. They have invited a number of leading overseas architects to do the designs – with some controversial, but impressive results.

One is the Olympic Stadium:

It’s also the only Olympic facility not quite completed. Amazing the efficienty of a totalitarian state in organizing an Olympic Games.

Schmap – Dynamic Travel Guides

Peter Long was asked if Schmap could use one of his flickr photos on their Paris page.

What is Schmap?

Exploring a Schmap Guide is a uniquely interactive experience: maps and guide content are dynamically integrated, allowing intuitive, real-time access to reviews and photo slideshows for places of interest.

Schmap has 200 cities available already, including Calgary.

It looks pretty cool. (The placement of the Google ads is particularly interesting to me.)

Jenn was the first female Olympic gymnast from Alberta. She aced the competition in Barcelona then went on to a very successful NCAA College gymnastics career, one of the top gymnasts ever from her school, scoring several “perfect 10s”. (Back when 10 was a perfect score.)

I was one of her coaches back in the day at Altadore. Now she’s got her own future Olympian. Wow!

My main use of photos is on-line, normally posted this size (500 pixels wide, landscape).

The originals are 1920 x 1080 pixels.

Unfortunately this camera has FEATURES that require me learning how to use them.

Details on the palmcorder which so far I like very much.

Gorillapod thoughts

My buddy Tom recommends one of these gizmos. I think I’ll get one for my new camcorder.

I bought one of these Gorillapod tripods last spring and finally made up my mind to take it out in the woods and see how handy it is for hiking.

Turns out it works pretty well — it stands on benches, grasps on branches, balances on rocks… there really are about a zillion configurations. It’s lightweight and easy to use, for the most part, but it’s got some limitations …
