If you ever have to go to court, don’t go to court in Georgia.
If you ever have to go to court in Georgia, here’s the worst case scenario:

This woman is symbolic for everything that is wrong with the American ‘tough on crime‘ trend.
I heard the awful story on This American Life – VERY TOUGH LOVE
This listener was moved:
…I am asking you to listen to the story. It takes a while, but listen to it. And then I am asking you to do something about it. I am asking you to please send an email to the Office of National Drug Policy asking them to please investigate this judge who is unfit to be on any bench.
Also, please send a letter or fax to the GA Judicial Qualifications Commission (they don’t accept email, apparently). Here is the contact information and a sample mock up.

I wanted to bring up a concern that I was recently made aware of by Ira Glass from This American Life. He gave an in-depth account with strong reporting about a particular Drug Court in Glynn and Camden Counties of Georgia. I am very concerned about the job that the Judge Amanda Williams is doing. The information presented in the news story about the manner in which Judge Amanda Williams is conducting herself is frightening. I live in metro Atlanta so I am not one of her constituents but I feel strongly that something should be done.
Travesty of Justice: Judge Amanda Williams, Glynn County, GA
Or email this judge directly – amandaw@glynncounty-ga.gov
Or send a message via her website. (Update. Her sites have been taken down.)
Or post this to Facebook. And Twitter.
Amanda F. Williams must be removed from the bench. She’s worse than Judge Judy, … and that’s saying something.

Please help us! We have been suffering since this woman took office in 1990! Now that her power-mad corruption has finally reached national attention we have a chance to finally get rid of her. Don’t believe there’s real corruption in Brunswick? Our local paper has still yet to print one word about this. Listen to the podcast. Google her name. This doesn’t even address her conduct in civil and criminal court! The story http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archive… Our site. http://impeachjudgewilliams.com/what-you-can-… (UPDATE 3/31/11)Well this mess finally made the paper six days since the first broadcast, cleaver how they tried to discredit the movement by having her people send out bogus death threats.http://www.impeachjudg ewilliams.com/bwknews-3-31-201 1.pdf
Thank you so much for providing information about how to speak out against Judge Williams!!! I was in tears after listening to the “Very Tough Love” episode of This American Life. I searched the internet looking for ways to fight this judge, and that is how I found your website. Judge Williams is shaming the American judicial system through her outrageous sentencing practices.
I have already reported Judge Williams to Amnesty International because I believe she is denying her defendants their basic human rights. I will also be writing letters as suggested above. If you have any other suggestions about how to stand up for justice and fight Judge Williams, please send them to me!
i am going to ask my friend who reps 60 Minutes and the New York Times and an CNBC reporter to do a piece on this MONSTER.
I’m a Canadian, not a U.S. citizen, but I too heard the piece and could barely believe it. How is this tolerated?
I have to believe that this sort of radio program (this american life), which is terrific btw, will have some positive effect on giving this judge the boot.

I think there should be an invetigation on how she obtained her position. There is much to found out if this is done.

I have listened to this story from “This American Life” several times. I continue to be amazed.
I live in GA, many in my family practice as lawyers. This type of court is obviously new(er) than 200 years of law or anything that the founding fathers could have anticipated. This judge has been in office since the 1990s. Obviously she has been re-elected.
“Overly punitive” is the phrase used by the commentator. I’m not making excuses for addicts. BUT, any drug counselor will tell you relapses are the norm and not the exception.
This Judge’s methods clearly have not been effective for the rehabilitation of offenders and and the open ended sentences are illegal in state and federal court and are unconstitutional ( if we were dealing with anything but drug court) . How do open-ended sentences and verbal abuse work?
How is this he most economical way for the state to deal with addicts? How does this program continue to get voter and county support? How does jailing an offender in solitary at the Judges’ discretion with no checks or balances make sense of our law system? How is it not torture????
