car rental insurance

Renting in the USA can be incredibly inexpensive. I have a vehicle right now in California that cost only $115.49 / week, including taxes.

Yet AS ALWAYS I was faced with the dilemma of what additional insurance to buy.

Should I buy none, counting only on my VISA card’s promised collision/loss damage insurance?

Or should I get one of the three different options available from the rent-a-car company:

$10/day
$12/day
$30/day

Reading this article in the Globe and Mail doesn’t answer my question:

Do I really need car rental insurance?

Leave a comment if you’ve any advice for me.

The answer to “do you need to buy rental insurance” varies state by state, unfortunately. In Canada, until this year, legislation throughout the provinces was consistent on the matter, but now Alberta has veered off from the pack, so it’s really a quagmire for the consumer. Those $30/day insurance rates are where the profits lie for rental agencies–not in the rental fees themselves. It’s bizarre.

My advice, is to buy some insurance. Even though my credit card apparently covers it, I recently had an experience that proved to me that buying is worth it. We got side exiting the Golden Gate Bridge. The other party didn’t stop, we had a plane to catch. Cost to us = $0. So the extra $45 I spent over the 3 days was really worth it. We handed in the car, signed one form with a small explanation of what happened and we caught the plane. The End!
