good news – students volunteering

After 2 weeks in Florida’s Spring Break central, I got interested in a new program initiated by The United Way and televised on MTV. It’s called The Amazing Break.

Instead of a drunken beach blow-out, college kids are offered alternatives.

One group is on the Equality Ride — a bus visiting conservative universities and military schools which they feel discriminate against gay and lesbian students. The first stop was Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.

In a scene out of Gandhi, the students lined up to be arrested for trespass all the while reading a statement of their cause.

Non-violent resistance is powerful. I was moved.

I met hundreds of volunteers in Central America too. It is excellent life experience, likely better than attending classes.

Peter and Joyce Long have a great set-up for keeping up with the “news”. They have satellite radio at home and in their vehicle set to BBC, the best mainstream news source in my opinion.

They have TIVO set to record BBC world service TV.

Excellent.

Yet I feel this traditional news reporting format will continue to decline. Fewer and fewer media competitors will spend less money covering even fewer stories.

American news coverage is particularly dismal.

Interactive news services where readers vote, comment and even write the news. My service will include much more gymnastics and hiking content than most. It will be individualized to my interests.

The best known of these upstart news sources is Digg.com

But the best (though it includes mostly American content so far) is NewsVine.

do not steal my laptop

Interesting story out of Australia.

An owner of a stolen laptop posted it on Ebay (in advance of the thieves) asking people not to purchase a Powerbook with Apple serial number W8506001SQ5.

Computer savvy, the owner also got the home IP & modem address of the thieves when they connected the stolen computer to the internet using their home wireless connection.

It’s not a good idea to steal something which has a tracking device built-in … unless you know what you are doing.

good news – populations beginning to decline

graphRussia’s population is expected to fall by 22% between 2005 and 2050, Ukraine’s by a staggering 43%. … Japan … has started to shrink and others, such as Italy and Germany, will soon follow. Even China’s population will be declining by the early 2030s, according to the UN, which projects that by 2050 populations will be lower than they are today in 50 countries.

good news – the RICH getting thinner

Now if only I could get rich …

Maybe after the Christmas pig-outs.

The WHO says “an escalating global epidemic of overweight and obesity — ‘globesity’ — is taking over many parts of the world”. But that Americans & Brits stopped ballooning in 2003.
