goodbye Justin Long?

This is a mockument tribute to the great Apple vs PC TV commercials.

But the ad campaign is rumoured to be over. Customers prefer the nerdy PC (John Hodgman) over the cool Mac guy, Justin Long.

But there’s hope. Justin Long says he is scheduled for more. I hope so. They are brilliant.

Apple taking over at Princeton

Brainiacs know.

45 percent of computers purchased (at Princeton) this year were Macs, more than in any previous year. In 2003, when this year’s seniors arrived on campus, just 15 percent of them chose Macs. …

The upswing is not limited only to students. “A relatively high percentage of faculty use Macs,” …

The popularity of Apples on campus might seem surprising, considering that Apple holds only 4.8 percent of the U.S. market share …

iTunes 7 — Rafe says: Skip it

32069571-2-300-overview-1.gif

iTunes 7 seduces you with features. … download album cover art for music you got somewhere other than iTunes, and it can play tracks without any audio gap between them. There’s a new interface that makes more sense, and it has nice new graphical features. And of course, there’s support for movie download and playback. On my home PC, I eagerly updated from the previous version and fired it up. And I wish I hadn’t. This application is the worst system hog I’ve ever seen. I simply can’t leave it running and expect to get anything else done. Maybe you’ll have better luck than I did. But don’t be surprised if you find …

I try to wait before upgrading software until the main bugs are found by the consumers.

With iTunes in particular, be careful. Unless you are keen on Disney movie downloads (only available in the States) or cover art — stick with your older version.

If you do not have iTunes now, get version 7 for free. It is by far the best music, podcast and on-line video jukebox.

John Hodgman – comedian – net neutrality

Everything this guy does breaks me up.

And Hodgman is everywhere right now.

He is the Bill-Gates-like PC in the hilarious Apple computer Get-a-Mac ads.

His bits on the Daily Show are classic. Here’s one where Hodgman explains Net Neutrality. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Google CEO joining Apple

Google CEO Eric Schmidt is joining Apple Computer’s board of directors, the computer maker said on Tuesday, creating a close tie between two of Silicon Valley’s most iconic companies.

The addition of Schmidt to the board of Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple brings the total number of board members to eight, including Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder and CEO, and Al Gore, former vice president of the United States. …

Gapple?

THis week’s Marketwatch column by John addresses the real meaning of all this. He suspects it is part of an Apple-Sun merger!

Apple starting to worry the PC hordes

Dell and others are beginning to get concerned. Microsoft employees are actually now allowed to bring new Apple laptops to work as they can boot Windows. (iPods still discouraged.)

Many are predicting a big jump in Apple market share in coming months.

anti-iTunes demonstrations across the USA

itunesinknots.jpgBoing Boing: Anti-iTunes DRM demonstrations across the USA tomorrow

Freedom of choice demonstrators will picket Apple Stores, unhappy about the proprietary restrictions bundled with every song you buy from iTunes.

I have mixed feelings myself. The DRM (digital rights management) format has not caused me any grief yet.

I can easily convert iTunes songs to a format which plays in my non-Apple MP3 player right in iTunes.

Apple Powerbook

The worst fanatics are religious fanatics. And the worst religion these days is the Cult of Steve Jobs. Yup, I am an Apple Computer zealot.

Currently I run a 12 inch Powerbook — plenty of punch but still small enough to haul around on my travels. I recommend it.
