So far, I’m liking the Coolpix 830.  Powered by 4 (replaceable) AA batteries. Good for longer hiking trips.

cats that look like Hitler

I once saw a cat that looked exactly like Hitler. But did not get a photo.

For over an hour I tried to track down that Kitler. No luck.

Recently I saw another cat that looked somewhat like Hitler.

Gelada baboons, Ethiopia

I hiked the Simien mountains in northern Ethiopia with Joshua and Nadine from Edmonton. They are nurses living in Africa for the past 2 years, putting together a rural Health Clinic in Burundi.

The biggest highlight was hanging out with Geladas, the friendliest simians anywhere.

Protected and not endangered, these grass eaters are comfortable with people coming close. A few of the curious babies reached out and almost touched us.

Here are more of Josh and Nadine’s photos.

I posted high resolution versions of those on my flickr.

Kathmandu photos

Kathmandu should be the most interesting and surprising tourist city in the world. There’s something astonishing around every corner.

Shame it’s so polluted. So disorganized. 😦

Monkey Temple, Kathmandu

The Buddha taught here. It’s said. Emperor Ashoka built a temple here in the 3rd century BC, it’s said.

But the earliest confirmed activity here was 460 AD.

It’s my favourite place in Kathmandu.

I visited 3 times in 2 days. (Don’t ask. It’s embarrassing.)

Dusk is the best time.

Swoyambhunath … is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in … Kathmandu city. It is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys …

… among the oldest religious sites in Nepal. …

Although the site is considered Buddhist, the place is revered by both Buddhists and Hindus. …

new Park in Nanning

I signed on for a free tour out to a sprawling new super park on the outskirts of sprawling new Nanning, China.

P1310035

One sign said Nanning Wuxi Anghu Park, but I don’t find it online by that name. Something (once again) is lost in translation.

Each district of Guangxi Province was represented in series visited via giant golf carts.

Like most Chinese tourists attractions, I found it impressive in scale and concept, but sterile and dull in reality. Lifeless.

At a brief glimpse of Chinese Opera, I was interviewed by Nanning TV.
