baseball “gets” the internet

mlb_logo06.jpg

Who’da thunk it?

Baseball (barely a sport) is one of the biggest success stories on the internet.

In 2000, a few visionary executives saw the potential for baseball on the Internet …

Baseball’s 30 teams agreed to each kick in $1-million (U.S.) a season over four years to jump-start the venture at a time when streaming media was in its infancy.

Yet the gamble worked, and much sooner than anticipated.

In just its second year of operation, the site had paid for itself. Users were logging on by the millions, first for audio play-by-play and extensive stats, then for video, and today for the massive amount of content, such as the live pitch tracker.

Revenue from the site, which is divided equally between the 30 teams, soared to $195-million last year, from $36-million in 2001. Visitors have climbed to 1.7 billion from 190 million during that time, while subscribers — who shell out anywhere from $10 a season to $100 for access to video, audio and statistical breakdowns of games — hit 1.3 million last year, up from 125,000 in 2001.

When baseball considered taking MLB Advanced Media public in late 2004, four U.S. investment banks valued the company at between $2-billion and $2.5-billion. Thanks to the rapidly rising popularity of Internet video, that valuation has risen to between $4-billion and $5-billion since, the league says.

… The league’s next leap will come in 2007 when it attempts to offer video content for mobile phones, keeping it well ahead of professional football, hockey and basketball, which are still in the process of getting their games on-line.

Flames to win Stanley Cup 2007

… the Flames finish second in the Western Conference before a magical playoff run ends with them beating the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup.

Newcomer Alex Tanguay wins the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, but it’s captain Jarome Iginla who really makes the Flames burn.

Iggy scores a league-best 63 goals and 125 points in the regular season and ensures this trip to the NHL final doesn’t end in heartbreak, as it did in 2004.

It’s enough to help rookie coach Jim Playfair win the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year at an NHL awards ceremony high on Calgary content. Tanguay (Hart Trophy, Lady Byng), Miikka Kiprusoff (Vezina Trophy) and Robyn Regehr (Norris Trophy) are all finalists for major trophies.

The Habs are the best of the rest in Canada, finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference thanks in large part to a strong performance by captain Saku Koivu. But then Montreal loses in the first round to the Buffalo Sabres.

Ottawa, Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto don’t make the playoffs.

worst referee of the year?

Ron Johnson seemingly hauled in a pass that would have put Calgary on the Toronto five-yard line. However, the pass was ruled incomplete and replays confirmed the call on the field.

Monsters and Critics

angry guyThat’s it. I am boycotting the CFL.

I watched one game of the recently successful Canadian Football League and suffered through an insanely bad (reviewed by replay) call by the referees.

In the dying seconds Toronto got a lucky call when it looked Calgary was sure to tie the game. What happened there? The media did not seem to cover the injustice. The Calgary players and coach did not react to the mis-call.

If I want fixed fights, I will watch professional wrestling.

Tiger the greatest golfer of all-time

Update: Tiger will track down Jack, here’s when and where – Sports Illustrated

He hit a wayward shot onto the roof of the Firestone clubhouse in Akron during the Bridgestone Invitational. He bogeyed four holes in a row for the first time since he was a tour rookie 10 years ago. He lost a three-shot lead with three holes to play. He yelled “Fore!” on several occasions. In a playoff with Stewart Cink, Woods missed two of the first three greens in regulation and bogeyed one of the holes. All in all, Woods looked mortal once again after a stretch where he won three tournaments in a row, including two straight major championships, that made him appear nearly invincible once again.

Well, maybe he is invincible. Despite all those travails, Woods won again.

sick of doping scandals

Gatlin Tests Positive for Testosterone

Tour de France winner Floyd Landis tests positive

Both claim to be innocent. Just like Ben Johnson. Ben was lying in 1988 though I believed him at the time.

It’s sad to see the accomplishments of fantastic athletes overshadowed by media coverage of alleged doping. The clean competitors must be plenty ticked off.

Despite what Lance Armstrong says, I believe drug use is endemic in tour cycling. There is just too much smoke for there to be no fire.

Henceforth I dismiss the Tour de France as I dismiss Olympic Weight Lifting and Olympic Sprinting. “Sports” with no more credibility than World Wrestling Entertainment.

Drugs and Cycling - The True Story

disappointed by professional soccer

Like many North Americans, I only tuned into the World Cup in the last half of the final game.

I found it fairly dull. Better than cricket and baseball — but dull. The rules badly need revised. It is unfair to the skilled players to so often decide the outcome by penalty shots or a shoot out.

My main memory of the final is the shocking Zinedane Zidane head-butting of Italian Marco Materazzi. Inexcusable. Any 10-year-old knows not to get provoked by trash talk.

Still, my crowd was mostly cheering for Italy.

Comment:

I agree soccer spends too much time spent between exciting plays, and defending is made too easy. The offside rules are particularly stifling. Basketball is as good as a finesse team sport gets and something that both hockey and soccer can learn from–hockey started to incorporate rules that encourage finesse last season with good results. NA games like football and baseball are unique in that unlike other team sports, individuals have the opportunity to shine built into the rules of the play. You can imagine hockey and soccer teams winning games without great play from stars, but the same cannot be said for baseball and football where quarterbacks and pitchers, sluggers and running backs can and should rule a game altogether.

Yup, I am forced to cheer for the Oilers, our traditional rivals. This is a first.

I have been shocked and impressed how well they have done to get to the Stanley Cup finals.

Still, I think they don’t have a chance against the high powered Hurricanes. (Since I’ve been wrong with all my other predictions these play-offs, there’s hope.)

GO OILERS!

Crusaders win Super 14 Rugby

Australia, New Zealand & South Africa participate in one of the premiere sports in the Southern Hemisphere — Rugby Union. (Not Rugby League or my personal favourite, Rugby Sevens)

In 2006, the Super 12 became the Super 14, with the Western Force joining from Perth, Australia, and the Central Cheetahs joining from the Free State and Northern Cape Provinces, South Africa.

The finals were predictable. My old home team, the Christchurch Crusaders won in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2005 & again in 2006. Congratulations!

New Zealand to host Rugby World Cup 2011

In a surprise, controversial win over Japan, my former homeland is over the moon.

All Black fans should start planning now to travel to New Zealand for 2011. I hope to see you there! The All Blacks are the most successful rugby side of all time — but they have only won the World Cup once.
