TIME Magazine names me “Person of the Year”

About time.

image2274519.jpg

It’s a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It’s about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people’s network YouTube ….

It’s about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes. …

…, we also worked. Like crazy. We made Facebook profiles and Second Life avatars and reviewed books at Amazon and recorded podcasts. We blogged about our candidates losing and wrote songs about getting dumped. We camcordered bombing runs and built open-source software.

America loves its solitary geniuses—its Einsteins, its Edisons, its Jobses—but those lonely dreamers may have to learn to play with others. Car companies are running open design contests. Reuters is carrying blog postings alongside its regular news feed. Microsoft is working overtime to fend off user-created Linux. We’re looking at an explosion of productivity and innovation, and it’s just getting started, as millions of minds that would otherwise have drowned in obscurity get backhauled into the global intellectual economy.

Who are these people? Seriously, who actually sits down after a long day at work and says, I’m not going to watch Lost tonight. I’m going to turn on my computer and make a movie starring my pet iguana? I’m going to mash up 50 Cent’s vocals with Queen’s instrumentals? I’m going to blog about my state of mind or the state of the nation or the steak-frites at the new bistro down the street? Who has that time and that energy and that passion?

… Sure, it’s a mistake to romanticize all this any more than is strictly necessary. Web 2.0 harnesses the stupidity of crowds as well as its wisdom. Some of the comments on YouTube make you weep for the future of humanity just for the spelling alone, never mind the obscenity and the naked hatred.

best RSS reader for “Rich Media”?

Splashcast likes Google Reader best (sort of) but it still falls short of his dream RSS reader.

Playing audio and video from within the reader is still a problem.

Summary of Recommendations

As a Mac user, I’m going to spend more time with NewsFire on my desktop. If I was a Windows user and wanted to consume video inline and needed a river of news view – I would cry. If rich media is more important to you then go with Google Reader. If a river of news is more important then go with FeedDemon.

Ecto blogging software? … not yet

This blog is published directly to my web host through a fairly clunky interface. It’s also slow.

Ecto is the best alternative on Mac, so far, desktop software, much more powerful, much faster.

But I will not be switching to Ecto … yet.

I had a couple of minor complaints

  • No “bug report” link.
  • When you click “Retrieve Entries”, nothing shows until ALL the entries are available. Better would be to show them as downloaded.
  • I cannot add a new “category” from Ecto.

But mainly I just could not get “into” the interface. I will wait a few months, I think.

Feature request — “built in video tutorials” under the HELP menu, please. Short video clips are by far the best way to get new users “into” new software.

Greenpeace says Apple not “green”

UPDATE:

One guy with a computer and a blog can make change.

See the reference to Canada below? You can thank RickMcCharles.com for getting that added.

The error was certainly not Apple’s, I was assured by Apple.

I insisted on a free laptop for "pain and suffering" the error caused me. Will let you know when it arrives.

I love the hilarious Apple spoof site posted by Greenpeace at GreenMyApple.com.

Apple is still not feeling the love:

Environmental group Greenpeace on Wednesday issued the first quarterly update on the technology industry’s performance on environmental issues. While the group recognized many companies are improving Apple does not appear to be among them — Apple remains in last place.

“We were surprised they were in last place again,” Zeina Alhajj, campaign coordinator for Greenpeace, told Macworld. “We are hoping that by the next ranking they will be the biggest mover.”

The report ranks the 14 top manufacturers of personal computers and cell phones. …

Representatives from Apple were not immediately available for comment. …

Nokia continues to hold the top spot in the ranking for both its chemicals policy as well as disposal of electronic waste.

Apple gets low score in Greenpeace e-waste report

My own experience backs up the Greenpeace claim.

I’m trying to recycle two Apple laptops. Though Apple says they offer a program in Canada here, here and here, when I phoned their recycling partner (888-638-2761), I was informed the Apple recycling program has not come to Canada.

When directed to the recycling partner web page, there is no mention of Canada.

In the USA I could pay US$30 to ship up to 60lbs of Apple product to be properly recycled.

I emailed Apple (irecycle @apple.com) to inquire. I asked they correct the wrong information on their web pages if the program is not running in Canada. No response yet.

Perhaps the local recycling program here in Calgary is just as good, I’m not sure.

Still. Apple is usually as good as their word. They do not make mistakes on web pages.

What’s up Apple?

eat, sleep, blog

I’ve been spending a lot of time on the computer the last few weeks.

Some interesting things happening with besthike.com, my most important site.

Ecto – blogging software

Just testing highly regarded Ecto.

Normally I blog on-line. But Ecto allowed me to draft this post on my computer, do advanced formatting. And then send it to the internet when finished.

It’s certainly faster to stay off the internet while drafting a post.
And the formatting tools are much more powerful.

It supports drag and drop images. That’s a big improvement!

what blog software to choose?

As of today, the best choice for most people is WordPress. That’s what I use on this site. It’s open source and free.

I feel WordPress strikes the right balance between simplicity and control of content.

Here’s a good article comparing the pros and cons of the different options:

my latest website

For years I’ve been a volunteer Board member on the Altadore Weightlifting and Fitness Club. I put together a website / blog for the club to improve our visibility and communication.

More importantly, I want to store our documentation in password protected folders on the site for ease of access and revision.

Using gymnastics as a base, our club offers strength, power and flexibility improvement training in an adult social environment. Our members are age-16 and older.

Under the supervision of certified gymnastics coaches, you decide your own training regime. Our facility has gymnastics equipment not available in the weight room. You use your own body weight as resistance.
