the quirky murals of Chemainus, BC

My parents and I made a road trip to see the painted walls of Chemainus, British Columbia, a seaside village not far from their home town of Parksville.

At first glance you’d think this is just another municipal ploy to lure tourists into to buy junky trinkets produced in China.

But there is something compelling about this collection. They are so crude and quaint, that I can’t help liking them.

travellers love Gadling

Man, it makes my head spin just to think of all the things we’ve covered, the gazillions of articles we’ve read and written about, trips we’ve done, blogs we’ve reviewed, snarky thoughts we’ve had on everything from airlines to zippers. And all the amazing folks who have joined up to make gadling one of the best travel blogs out there.

Gadling’s 10,000th Post – Gadling

I see nonsense on the internet that blogging has “peaked”.

What about the long tail? Cumulative wisdom?

From the Gadling photo pool – the most beautiful city I’ve seen – Istanbul.

… OOPS.

Gadling is long past 10,000 posts. I missed that milestone as I have so many others.

another innovative Green Skyscraper

The Lighthouse is another innovative green skyscraper to be constructed in Dubai. For energy generation, it will have three enormous 225 kilowatt wind turbines (29 meters in diameter), and 4000 photovoltaic panels on the south facing façade.

Rick in Bamfield

Today I travel by ferry from Ucluelet to quaint Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Likely will do some kayak hiking for a couple of days. I’ll watch out for the BIG waves.

Did you hear about the 5 hikers nearly killed on the West Coast Trail last week?

The trailhead is in Bamfield.

GONE FISHIN …

My Dad and I are out on a Father’s Day charter — fishing for Halibut and Ling Cod. (3AM departure)

Even if we catch squat, I’ll be sure to Photoshop some world-record-breaker on this blog.

Fishing and lying go together like rod and reel.

photos – eXtreme off-roading

I went to Moab, Utah for hiking.

But almost everyone else was there for biking and off-roading.

Look like fun to you?

Last time I went to Peru I planned a trip on the Carhuaz Valley road to the Chavin De Huantar ruins. But ran out of time. I missed this experience.

you think your job is bad …

How’s this for dirty work?

Heading off to work at the salt mine each day … by bike.

Elevation 3.65km (2.26mi) high. Thin air. Shadeless. No water. Freezing cold or scorchingly hot.

Don’t forget your pick and shovel.

For me and most travellers, the most memorable highlight of travel in South America are the salt flats of Uyuni in Bolivia.

Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan – Al Capone’s hideout

People from Moose Jaw have been told about the tunnels underneath their city for many generations. They were told that smugglers and criminals, such as legendary American gangster Al Capone, used to use them as hideouts.

The tunnels are now used as a tourist attraction and two interactive tours of the tunnels are now available.

One tour is about the bootlegging days of Al Capone; the other is about the Chinese immigrants who lived in the tunnels in the early part of the 20th century. It is Moose Jaw’s main tourist attraction and has attracted people from all over the world.

This photo is one of Capone’s molls … or, possibly a friend’s Mom.

Anyway, she should have been a moll.
