PM to appear on TV sitcom Corner Gas

Dana loves this Canadian show.

People send her the episodes all the way to Vegas.

Corner Gas is poised to deliver its 69th consecutive episode with a million-plus audience.

These are dire days in Dog River, though.

Of the eight main characters on Corner Gas, seven on the March 12 show will experience staggering changes, most of which relate to employment. …

Ultimately, Brent sells his gas station to the Pump N’ Go conglomerate

What? Perhaps Prime Minister Harper can intervene on the season finale March 12th.

saved by Battlestar Galactica

I have been “full on”, almost distressed, jetting around Australia from one coaching conference to the next.

Fearing for my health and sanity, I turned to Captain Bill Adama and Battlestar Galactica — reimagined — in 2003 by the Sci-Fi Channel.

Their most watched TV series ever was my short daily escape from the busy gymnastics itinerary. A nice way to “tune out”.

Kara “Starbuck” Thrace is particularly compelling. And I like Edward James Olmos.

I highly recommend the series.

Google will rule

Bill is a poobah at computer services, University of Saskatchewan. Google approached him with some very enticing proposals. They offered to host the University email, for example. Bill feels Google plans to take over the Universe.

He’s not the only one.

And Google can do it.

Google controls more network fiber than any other organization. This is not to say that Google OWNS all that fiber, just that they control it through agreements with network operators. …

It is becoming very obvious what will happen over the next two to three years. More and more of us will be downloading movies and television shows over the net and with that our usage patterns will change.

Instead of using 1-3 gigabytes per month, as most broadband Internet users have in recent years, we’ll go to 1-3 gigabytes per DAY — a 30X increase that will place a huge backbone burden on ISPs. Those ISPs will be faced with the option of increasing their backbone connections by 30X, which would kill all profits, OR they could accept a peering arrangement with the local Google data center.

Seeing Google as their only alternative to bankruptcy, the ISPs will all sign on, and in doing so will transfer most of their subscriber value to Google, which will act as a huge proxy server for the Internet. We won’t know if we’re accessing the Internet or Google and for all practical purposes it won’t matter. Google will become our phone company, our cable company, our stereo system and our digital video recorder.

Soon we won’t be able to live without Google, which will have marginalized the ISPs and assumed most of the market capitalization of all the service providers it has undermined — about $1 trillion in all — which places today’s $500 Google share price about eight times too low.

It’s a grand plan, but can Google pull it off?

Yes they can.

DIAMANTE K

My favourite hotel on my favourite beach anywhere was the finish of an episode of Amazing Race. Cool.

Only 1200 meters from the breathtaking and legendary Mayan ruins of Tulum, an exclusive and quiet oasis can be found: Diamante K. It lies on beach front property of over one acre, and is surrounded by more than 200 palm trees.
Diamante K is an ecological hotel which features 30 cabanas; all powered by solar energy and located only 20 meters from the sea and a beautiful private beach.

On the way up to skiing last weekend, George played us a 1hr TV show where comedians got to drive (and make fun of) high performance vehicles. It’s unscripted, light hearted, great!

TV – Archie Bunker is dead

Rockin’ forwarded me a Micro Persuasion article written by the brilliant Steve Rubel.

This time Steve gets it wrong. I was not persuaded.

So to sum up, TV is going to be fine, thank you. But it will look nothing like it does today and it will be open to all of us.

Micro Persuasion: How TV Will Become the Ultimate Open Content Platform

What we call TV now — the one where you sit on a couch like Archie Bunker — is dying FAST.

The future is interactive. It will be more like a gaming console than a computer experience. But it will be nothing like the click grazing through boring “commercial” channels we still do in 2006.

Steve misses the main point. He believes ABC, NBC, CBS and the like can evolve quickly enough to keep market share. I highly doubt it. They would have bought YouTube when they had the chance if they were that smart.

“Let’s Just Declare TV Dead and Move On”

A new poll in the UK shows that people who watch online videos tend to watch less television. It looks like they didn’t take into account that people with broadband Internet connections in general watch less television, so the poll may be more of a simple testament to the fact that as people spend more time on the Internet, television time suffers.

Regardless, the writing is on the wall. Sure, YouTube and CBS partnered up to declare that CBS clips on Youtube actually increased overall tv ratings, but that is almost certainly hogwash. …

There is a fundamental shift in consumer behavior going on – and the question is no longer if, but rather when, more television consumption will occur via the Internet than traditional broadcast and cable television.

The key tipping point will be when a startup is able to distribute proper television content over the Internet legally. People will begin to abandon their cable tv subscriptions in favor of Internet distribution.

goodbye Justin Long?

This is a mockument tribute to the great Apple vs PC TV commercials.

But the ad campaign is rumoured to be over. Customers prefer the nerdy PC (John Hodgman) over the cool Mac guy, Justin Long.

But there’s hope. Justin Long says he is scheduled for more. I hope so. They are brilliant.
