The Last of Us – season 1

Fantastic. Original. Painful to watch, at times.

The Last of Us is the bravest TV production ever.

It should win all the awards for 2023.

The main script writer is Craig Mazin, best known for creating the HBO miniseries Chernobyl. Mazin was college roommates with Ted Cruz — whom he now despises.

Episode 3 was amazing. One of the greatest in TV in history.

Mazin watched if over 200 times — and cried every time.

I’m thinking Nick Offerman as Bill, a gay survivalist, and Murray Bartlett as Frank, the love interest, are the roles those actors will be associated with for the rest of their lives.

Murray is gay. But Nick’s wife had to talk him into doing the role. It worked.

I listened to an interview with the video editors. The goal of this TV series was to emphasize the relationship between the characters, and treat the zombie action sequences as secondary.

Bella Ramsey was a genius choice to play the critical role of Ellie. Quirky and potentially violent. Over 100 others were considered for the part. I’m sure her weirdly compelling role as 10-year-old Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones won her the job.

Episode 7 was partly shot at my alma matter – University of Calgary.

Coastal Elites … 😇

Due to scheduling of dental appointments, I spontaneously booked a week long trip out to visit my parents on Vancouver Island.

En route I stopped at Chez Shew — and had perfect timing. Brian and Jane happened to be visiting the same weekend.

We enjoyed the classic beach off-leash walk. And were served up a lovely lunch by Kate … who I believe is the superior chef in the household.

The Consultant – season 1

An oddball horror? Black comedy?

WEIRD is what it is.

Weird and surprising enough to keep me going.

The Consultant is based on the novel of the same name by Bentley Little. …

The series follows the employees of a mobile gaming company whose leadership is taken over by a sinister consultant, played by Christoph Waltz, the Academy Award winner for playing evil villains.

In fact, without Waltz this show wouldn’t work. He can really sell evil.

He calls himself Regus Patoff — a shortened form of Registered US Patent Office.

Shrinking – season 1

Funny dialogue.

These writers must have been having a great time.

I’d give him housing in my … V or A. 😀

A therapist, Jimmy Laird, dealing with severe grief, begins to breach ethical barriers by telling his patients what he completely thinks, resulting in massive changes to his and their lives. …

Kristen Baldwin of Entertainment Weekly gave the series a B+ and described the series as “a funny, brainy grief-com about the power—and dangers—of radical honesty.” …

Writing for The Wall Street Journal, John Anderson stated, “The overall sense is a little like laughing at a funeral; the human impulses are familiar, a little perverse and somehow comforting.”

Harrison Ford? A comic? Who knew? 😀

I do find the show to be unnecessarily profane. In fact, I finally QUIT on episode 4. That much swearing in a TV show is simply lazy.

Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie

Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie has 4 detectives and 4 possible suspects playing bridge after dinner.

At the end of the evening, Mr Shaitana is discovered murdered.

Who dunnit?

The victim had bragged to Hercule Poirot that he admired criminals who have evaded justice. Successful ones.

Had he deliberately invited killers to dinner?

Androgynous – Miley Cyrus, Joan Jett, and Laura Jane Grace

I’ve always loved the song Androgynous (1984) by The Replacements.

Here’s one of many terrific cover versions.

The Happy Hippie Foundation, founded by Miley Cyrus, “is a nonprofit organization that rallies young people to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBT youth, and other vulnerable populations.”

The Runaway by Nick Petrie

If you like Jack Reacher, you’ll like war veteran Peter Ash.

This is the 7th book in the series. The best, I’d say. But the bloodiest.

In this one, Ash is driving through northern Nebraska when he encounters a young pregnant woman alone on a gravel road, her car dead.

Peter offers her a lift, but what begins as an act of kindness soon turns into a deadly cat-and-mouse chase across the lonely highways with the woman’s vicious ex-cop husband hot on their trail.

The pregnant woman has seen something she was never meant to see . . . but protecting her might prove to be more than Peter can handle. …

ZZ Top “La Grange”

One of the great rock songs all time.

Released 1973, it refers to a brothel on the outskirts of La Grange, Texas.

If anyone has ever done it better, it MIGHT be Classic Rock Show. A fantastic cover band.

Bleeding Heart Yard By Elly Griffiths

Elly Griffiths’ third Harbinder Kaur mystery.

I like Hardbinder. A 38-year-old detective inspector who’s still living with her Sikh parents — and still hasn’t told them she’s a lesbian.

BUT in this book, Hardbinder finally moves out because she has accepted a new position in the Big Smoke, London.

Her first case is a murder at a school reunion: Garfield Rice, an eminent MP.

Sadly, I came away disappointed. I want to know more about Hardbinder — but chapters are told from the point of view of different suspects. Some unreliable. I didn’t care about any of them.

Agatha Christie would have been disappointed in the resolution of the murder mysteries, as well. It really isn’t very brilliant.

Hopefully book #4 will be better.

Banshees of Inisherin

Just excellent.

Excellent in every way.

I saw it described as a “finely crafted feel-bad treat“.

A dark comedy.

Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland in 1923, lifelong friends Pádraic and Colm, who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship.

The most memorable performance is Barry Keoghan as Dominic who steals every scene.
