Wikileaks – GREAT site in financial trouble

Wikileaks is a website that publishes anonymous submissions and leaks of sensitive governmental, corporate, organizational, or religious documents, while attempting to preserve the anonymity and untraceability of its contributors.

Within one year of its December 2006 launch, its database had grown to more than 1.2 million documents, leading to many front-page newspaper articles and political reforms. …

It’s a place where whistle blowers can post incriminating evidence about just about anything, anonymously.

This is EXACTLY how the internet can make the world a better place. More transparency. Less corruption and injustice.

Notable leaks include:

Daniel arap Moi family corruption

Swiss Bank – Julius Baer law suit

Guantánamo Bay procedures

Scientology documents

Hack of Sarah Palin’s Yahoo account

far-right British National Party membership list

Climate Research Unit email

Toxic dumping in Africa: The Minton report

Sadly, due to financial constraints, the site has currently suspended all operations other than submission of material.

Understandably, organizations that have something to hide hate this site. The rest of us should encourage and support it. Hopefully they will find some financing from those who want to improve the world.

airlines to waste MORE of your time

Via #jeffjarvis Grrrrr. RT @JPBarlow:

The TSA, accountable to no one, imposes idiotic new rules which the public can’t appeal.

NY Times – Additional Layer of Restrictions Is Imposed on Airline Passengers

One idiot gets through screening in Amsterdam. Now hundreds of thousands of flyers every day will be even more inconvenienced. Unnecessarily.

Does taking off your shoes before boarding make you feel any safer?

Recall that Newark airport in 2006 flunked 20 of 22 security tests operated by undercover federal agents. They failed to spot items including concealed bombs and guns.

Even if all passengers are forced to fly naked, it still won’t be possible to 100% deter idiots who aspire to be martyrs.

This is “security theatre“, plain and simple.

Security theater consists of security countermeasures intended to provide the feeling of improved security while doing little or nothing to actually improve security. …

There seems to be no way we can protest over zealous security measures in airports. Aside from avoiding flying. Avoid flying via the U.S.A. if you can.

Sure U.S. airlines will over-react. But Air Canada was one of the quickest to jump on the bandwagon:

… Air Canada’s Web site read, “during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps.” …

Another reason to fly WestJet, if you can.

Suddenly the world hates Canada

That’s the title of a great article by Jonathon Gatehouse in Macleans:

How did a country with two per cent of the world’s emissions turn global villain?

As a traveller, I’ve always benefited from the halo effect of being Canadian. Worldwide Canada has been admired, whether we deserve it or not.

Seems the shoe is on the other foot now.

… As scientists, activists, diplomats, and political leaders gather in Copenhagen for the United Nations’ 15th convention on climate change, Dec. 7 to Dec. 18, the northern hemisphere’s “helpful fixer” is undergoing a radical—and unrelentingly negative—image makeover. Canada “is now to climate what Japan is to whaling,” George Monbiot, a columnist for the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper, thundered late last month, citing the Harper government’s go-slow negotiating stance as “the major” obstacle to a new global agreement on curbing greenhouse gas emissions. “Until now I believed that the nation that has done the most to sabotage a new climate change agreement was the United States,” wrote Monbiot, a green campaigner and bestselling author. “I was wrong. The real villain is Canada.” …

Canada was named “Fossil of the Week” by the 450 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Copenhagen for its efforts to “block or stall” climate negotiations. Actually, this was the 3rd year in a row we’ve been given the dubious citation.

Our Prime Minister, from Alberta, is literally the poster bad boy.

ad campaign in the Copenhagen airport in preparation for the Copenhagen climate negotiations that start on Dec. 7. They’re a series of ads featuring Photoshopped images of sad-looking world leaders, apologizing for not addressing climate change when they had the chance. Canada’s Prime Minister looks like the saddest hockey coach in the land.” …

Certainly this is a Public Relations nightmare for Canada. The Harper Government could fall over this issue.

But are the charges fair?

They are as fair as that poster. Do you really believe that Copenhagen had any chance to prevent “Catastrophic Climate Change” if sad Canada had only supported the proposals of the Maldives?

Should Canada support the Maldive bid for the 2024 Olympics, as well?

The charges against Canada are emotional and overblown.

Alberta should not shut down the oil sands despite the environmental issues. That would be foolish, long-term.

Bangladesh, one of the nations most affected if sea levels rise, will not reduce carbon emissions. It’s more important that Bangladesh bring clean water, education and medical care to their citizens.

What’s the solution, then? Assuming that humanity is capable of altering climate.

I’d put all the money we can get from all sources into research. Let’s try to find a scientific way to reverse the effects of Climate Change. And to find ways we can help nations adapt to the possible changes.

… To be honest, I’d personally spend $0 researching climate change. I’d put it towards things I care about MORE than global warming.

Many more intelligent and researched than I, disagree. Feel free to vent in the comments.

my next JOB …

The chief of Peguis First Nation in Manitoba.

… Documents provided to CBC News by the advocacy group the Canadian Taxpayers Federation show that the chief and four councillors of the Peguis First Nation were paid between $206,000 and $310,000 each last year.

The community is home to about 7,200 people and is located about 200 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

CBC

Here’s the guy I’ll be replacing. (He’s caught up in some sort of scandal.)

My new house will have fast internet. The “Band” will pay for it. And by “Band”, I mean the Canadian Taxpayer.

It sucks to be a taxpayer. That’s why we don’t pay taxes on the Peguis First Nation.

What a sweet gig!

I’m so happy the white man invaded North America. Winnipeg’s mayor and Manitoba’s premier will make less than me. And they’ll pay taxes. Ha.

In fact, after he pays taxes (sucker) I’ll make more than Prime Minister Harper.

Of the 600+ recognized First Nations governments or bands in Canada, I want to be the highest paid. That’s my goal. I’ll decide my own salary once I get into power.

Please email Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs, and lobby him on my behalf.

… If anyone else figures out what’s going on in that Manitoba First Nation, I may have competition for the job.

Worst case scenario? I’m screwed if the Feds decide to reveal the pay of Band leaders online.

2nd-grader suspended over drawing of Jesus

Another school over-reacts.

Merry Christmas to those responsible at Lowell M. Maxham Elementary School, Taunton, Massachusetts (MA). You idiots.

Yeesh.

Father angered by forced psychological evaluation of boy, 8

Here’s the offending “violent” image …

… The student drew the picture shortly after taking a family trip to see the Christmas display at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, a Christian retreat site in Attleboro. He made the drawing in class after his teacher asked the children to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas, the father said. …

After it hit the fan in the media, school officials decided to dispute the father’s complaint. I’m inclined to believe the family … and crucify Julie Hackett, superintendent of the Taunton public schools.

why you should hate Rogers Communication

To find out, read this article – Rogers charges for ‘free’ text messages

… The (Better Business Bureau) in Burnaby, B.C., has received 581 consumer complaints about Rogers Communications in the last three years. It has given Rogers an “F” rating for failing to resolve many of those complaints to the customer’s satisfaction. …

The big 3 Telcos in Canada (Rogers, Bell and Telus) are locked into an environment where they each try to out-do each other in how to deceive and over-charge their customers.

Most recently it’s been the cash grab of 15 cents per incoming text message. But all three of these companies are not trustworthy.

I call for government to regulate them. (This is one case where government regulation might be better than the so-called “free” market.)

They have better phone service in Bangladesh than Canada!

Politicians … No matter how you bungle with intervention into the Canadian telephone market, your voters will appreciate your efforts.

We hate phone companies even more than we hate politicians.

I’m watching closely the launch of the newest phone competitor, Wind Mobile. Here’s their first customer …

why oh why do humans live in Canada?

Nine Alberta communities had record-breaking cold temperatures on Monday morning, including Edmonton, Sundre and Rocky Mountain House, which all recorded temperatures of about –41 C. Much of Alberta was under a wind chill warning, with Environment Canada expecting “bitterly cold temperatures and brisk winds.”

Overnight Saturday, Edmonton recorded the lowest temperature in North America when it reach –46 C. To put that into perspective, Siberia reached a low of –49 C that day, said CBC Calgary weather specialist Danielle Savoni. …

privacy, ha … get over it

In the U.K. we can see what’s yet to come in the other large cities of the world.

They have cameras everywhere.

One London bus has 16 CCTV cameras inside.

So far they’ve spent £500m on the Closed Circuit TV program.

Does it work?

Only one crime was solved by each 1,000 CCTV cameras in London last year, a report into the city’s surveillance network has claimed.

The internal police report found the million-plus cameras in London rarely help catch criminals. …

details on the brilliant social commentary

At my hostel in Edinburgh there’s a sign in the kitchen saying:

Food has been stolen from this kitchen. If it continues, we’re actually going to take the time to review the video camera monitoring it!

I think these cameras are inevitable. They don’t work now. But our robot overlords will improve them over time.

Massacre of Cermis – US pilot kills 20 in Italy

In European mountains this summer I’ve taken a lot of cable cars.

Cablecar.zelllamsee.500pix

Each and every time I’ve cursed the U.S. military for an incident in 1998 the Italians call the Massacre of Cermis.

The Cavalese cable car disaster of 1998 (as distinct from the similarly named disaster of 1976), occurred on 3 February 1998 near the Italian town of Cavalese, a ski resort located in the Dolomites, some 40 km north-east of Trento. The disaster, which led to the death of 20 people, occurred when a U.S. military plane cut a cable supporting a gondola of an aerial tramway. …

The pilot of that military jet, Captain Richard J. Ashby, was only found guilty of “obstruction of justice” and “conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman” for having destroyed a videotape recorded from the plane.

He was dismissed from the Marines as was navigator, Captain Joseph Schweitzer.

Flying at 500 MPH in the busy Dolomites. I’d shoot Ashby myself if I got the chance.

… The restrictions in effect at the time required a minimum flying height of 2,000 feet (610 m); the pilot said he thought they were 1,000 feet (300 m). The cable was cut at a height of 360 feet (110 m). …

Bloody American military!

The worst cable car accident ever was not the Massacre of Cermis. But it was at that same ski resort in Italy, in 1976.

… 42 people including 15 children died when the steel cable of their cable car broke. … The cabin fell some 700 feet (200 m) down a mountainside, and then a heavy overhead carriage assembly fell on top of it. Only one passenger survived, a 14 year old girl. …
