Indiana Hoser

I, Ricky Bobby, first visited Indianapolis (pop. 2 million) in 1991 for the World Gymnastics Championships and had a great time. This time I am here representing Cirque du Soleil at the USA Diving Championships.

White River State Park and the Zoo are sprawling green spaces adjacent to IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis)Dan Quayle is an alumni.

The Indiana University Natatorium is host of the Championships.

A lovely canal system winds through the parks near the venue.

Indianapolis is home to USA Diving, USA Gymnastics and the NCAA Headquarters. More important to Hoosiers is The Brickyard, home to the Indianapolis 500. (I am in town during the Allstate 400 at The Brickyard – the NASCAR Nextel Cup.)

The days of the Klan ruling ‘Naptown’ are long gone. But Indianapolis is back on the maplike Brockway, Ogdenville, and North Haverbrook — because they have a monorail.

It broke down during a heat wave, the day I arrived, cooking some hospital patients.

radio – Sook-Yin Lee – DNTO

syl.jpgA lifelong CBC AM radio listener, these days I am reduced to listening almost exclusively via podcast. Radio on demand, when and where I want.

Best is downloading the podcasts to my MP3 player and listening while cycling.

My favourite show is Definitely Not the Opera, the weekly pop culture wrap-up hosted by talented Sook-Yin Lee in Winnipeg. It is consistently excellent.

Check it out on the DNTO website. You can download the podcast from iTunes, of course. It’s free.

Jon Stewart on Net Neutrality

It seems the traditional American media near ignored the astonishing lack of understanding of Ted Stevens, chairman of the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Gladly, we have one “journalist” putting this dinosaur’s feet to the fire.

I say again, the USA is in trouble because of their legislative process. Perhaps they should try democracy and free market economics.

The TWITs weigh in on their podcast.

McDonalds billboard sundial

the billboard features a real sundial whose shadow falls on a different breakfast item each hour until noon, when the shadow of the McDonald’s arches are dead center.

want a house in Saskatchewan?

UPDATE.

The guy who tried to trade up a paperclip for a house will soon take possession of a two-storey farmhouse in Kipling, Saskatchewan.

Big deal.

People will pay you to take houses in rural Saskatchewan off their hands.

TV – Futurama returning in 2008

The original cast members of Futurama have signed to make 13 new episodes.

It will air on Comedy Central in 2008.

I love the concept. And this time round I expect the quality to go up as it did when Family Guy was resurrected.

¡Ask a Mexican!

Jack Black is a Mexican professional wrestler in the so-so film Nacho Libre.

Better Mexican humour is a small town newspaper column ¡Ask a Mexican! penned by Gustavo Arellano.

Began as a one-time politically incorrect joke, it’s become a hit. Arellano even got a guest spot on The Colbert Report.

If you like Jeff Foxworthy (rednecks) and Dave Chappelle (African Americans) — you will like ¡Ask a Mexican!.

Inquiring Gringos Want to Know – review in the LA Times

Racism is slowly, slowly decreasing in the world. Sport and entertainment are the best ways to break down barriers.
