in search of Greg Norman

Added a few more photos of a Vancouver Island road trip with Mom and Dad and Pete.

We had heard golfer Greg Norman was around eyeballing the terrain for a future course overlooking the sea.

Pete (our Jack Russell) couldn’t pick up Greg’s scent. We failed to track down the Great White Shark.

the quirky murals of Chemainus, BC

My parents and I made a road trip to see the painted walls of Chemainus, British Columbia, a seaside village not far from their home town of Parksville.

At first glance you’d think this is just another municipal ploy to lure tourists into to buy junky trinkets produced in China.

But there is something compelling about this collection. They are so crude and quaint, that I can’t help liking them.

world record Halibut

How did we do on the Father’s Day fishing trip?

world-record.jpg

The big three as far as my Dad is concerned:

1. Halibut
2. Salmon
3. Ling Cod

We went for Halibut and — aside from the World Record — were shut out.

The Canadian Princess charter boats out of Bamfield want to fish the rich waters off Long Beach, Vancouver Island.

But after 45min of near seasickness in high wind and waves, we gave up and retreated to the protected waters of the Broken Island group.

There we jigged for bottom fish. And 19 licensed salmon slayers took only 2 salmon and 14 more smallish prizes home to eat.

Dad caught three. Meself, one. All released back to the sea to grow larger. Or be taken by bald eagle.

Worst charter day yet with Princess for my Dad. (Aside from the World Record.)

GONE FISHIN …

My Dad and I are out on a Father’s Day charter — fishing for Halibut and Ling Cod. (3AM departure)

Even if we catch squat, I’ll be sure to Photoshop some world-record-breaker on this blog.

Fishing and lying go together like rod and reel.

World Fantasy 2008 – Calgary

My brother is a key organizer for the biggest Sci If Fantasy Writer’s convention of 2008.

VIPs scheduled already include David Morrell, Barbara Hambly, Tom Doherty, Todd Lockwood and Tad Williams.

Our theme for 2008 is “Mystery in Fantasy and Horror”.

Much of our program will look at how the mysterious is used in fantasy and horror storytelling. Be it occult detectives, Holmsian dragons, or Who Stole Frodo’s Ring? How does mystery play out in fantastical fiction?

McCharles Lake

I first heard of McCharles lake while researching the family tree. It is located in Graham township near Sudbury, Ontario.

It’s not named after ME, so far as I know. But the ancestors, no doubt, fished these waters.

Happy St. Patrick’s

images1.jpegWhen Irishmen see my last name, they tend to beat me with Shillelaghs.

But I’m Irish as Guinness a faux Irish pub in Canada. All four Two of my grandparents immigrated from Ireland.

(My Mom corrected me on this. Dad’s parents were born in Canada. His grandmother was French Canadian. Her parents came from Ireland.)
