hiking Iceland in June

Locked and loaded.

I fly out of Halifax (after Gymnastics Nationals) on the red eye June 2nd one way direct to Reykjavik. ($315 on Iceland Air)

There are even cheaper fares out of Boston and Chicago on the discount airline, Iceland Express, but I had no luck contacting them by email or phone.

It’s not my style to book a flight so early … but both the last two summers I found that airfares skyrocket around June 1st. And those flights fill quickly.

Laugavegur hike

I understand weather is a factor.

more interesting Iceland photos

I’ll be in Iceland a couple of weeks. Then likely fly on to Europe.

Pike Place Market, Seattle

I take the ferry over to Victoria Friday morning.

Walking through historic Pike Place Market en route to the 8am departure, I’ll grab a Pike Roast at Starbucks. The original opened here in 1971.

hiking Iceland in June

Last summer I again squandered my chance to get to Iceland for the first time. I felt even worse after following Alastair Humphreys’ adventures there.

It’s looking good for me to go June 2011.

The first week I’ll rent a vehicle and drive the island dayhiking.

Mt. Helgafell

Following that I’ll trek the hotsprings of Laugavegur. Possibly Fimmvörðuháls. And more in that region.

No eruptions this Spring, please.

Leave a comment if you’ve any advice for me.

want a FREE Honda Civic?

First you need read this post …

After 11yrs carless, I bought a ’96 Honda Civic hatchback a year ago for $1600.

With it I made 2 big road trips through the USA.

While away for 3 months (Oct-Dec) I offered to hire Sam to “take care” of my cherished vehicle.

Here’s how I found it:

One tire was a little low

… I had to reduce his wages. 🙂

Just to get it back roadworthy my first quote was for about $850.

… no go.

Instead I’ll donate it to the Kidney Foundation. Or give it away to friends.

Was it worth the hassle and responsibility of possession?

I think so.

$1600 initial cost
$1000 insurance for 1 year
$500 repairs in Montana
$400 AMA, registration and other incidental repairs
______
$3500 for one year … plus fuel / oil

I’ll be giving it away Feb. 7th

Contact me if you want this lemon for free. It’s running. But that’s the best I can say.

love the University vibe …

After a week back working out of University of Saskatchewan, I realize how much I miss the ambiance of Academe.

Even in WINTER.

There’s something about youthful enthusiasm combined with people actually valuing ivory tower navel gazing.

Nobody glances twice at an upcoming seminar here:

Gamma Rays and Puffer Fish.

SNAFU

I MUST spend more time at Universities on my future travels.
