On The Media audiocast
On The Media is my favourite podcast.
WNYC’s weekly investigation into how the media shapes our world view. Veteran journalists Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield give you the tools to survive the media maelstrom.
The most recent episode is super — This is Not a Safe Space. It explores the issues of students feeling safe on campus and academic freedom of speech.
White male patriarchy results in bullying on campus for anyone who is not a white male. Something like 1/5 women will STILL be sexually assaulted in their College years.
We want all students to feel safe while simultaneously protecting freedom of speech. The two are not mutually exclusive.
do you share fake news?
If so, what the Hell is the matter with you? 😦

We’ve always had propaganda.
Big Tobacco obfuscation of facts about cancer and smoking, for example.
… ignorance spreads when firstly, many people do not understand a concept or fact and secondly, when special interest groups – like a commercial firm or a political group – then work hard to create confusion about an issue. …

Not ALL Trump supporters are idiots.
But those who claim there’s a War on Christmas … are idiots. Merry Christmas. 🙂 And Happy Hanukkah. 🙂

on White privilege
I believe about half of Trump voters are racist … to some degree.
Only a few are White nationalists.

In the USA Italians and Greeks are White. But people of Spanish heritage are Hispanic. Weird.
Trump himself may or may not be racist. He’s first and foremost an egomaniac. All about self aggrandizement. He used racism to win the Presidency. And — astonishingly — it worked.
Trump wants to take from the poor and give to the ultra-rich. That will quickly become clear. There’s no way he’ll be able to win a second term. Therefore he’ll have to loot the nation quickly.
Hopefully he won’t destroy the entire World in the process.

many Drumpf voters are racist
Increasingly I’m thinking the most common denominator for Drumpf voters is racial resentment.
There is absolutely no evidence that Trump’s supporters, either in the primary or the general election, are disproportionately poor or working class. Exit polling from the primaries found that Trump voters made about as much as Ted Cruz voters, and significantly more than supporters of either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders.
Trump voters, FiveThirtyEight’s Nate Silver found, had a median household income of $72,000, a fair bit higher than the $62,000 median household income for non-Hispanic whites in America. …
In the primary, though, the story was, as my colleague Zack Beauchamp has explained at length, almost entirely about racial resentment. There’s a wide array of data to back this up. …
Taking Trump voters’ concerns seriously means listening to what they’re actually saying

Trump empowers the Alt-Right
Do you know Pepe the frog?
Pepe is a cartoon-strip creature used as a symbol of right wing extremists. Extremists like Drumpf’s son Donald Trump Jr. who proudly shared this image on Instagram.

Gov. Mike Pence, Gov. Chris Christie, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Dr. Ben Carson, both of Trump’s eldest sons, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, alt-right icon Milo Yiannopoulos, and Roger Stone.
I first started following American politics because of the Tea Party, a backward, negative, semi-racist and homophobic collection of zealots and hypocrites. Looking back, Michele Bachmann’s antics seem almost laughable.
The Alt-Right is far, far worse. 😦
And they’ve come to public attention because an egomaniac psychopath has had success spouting their hateful rhetoric.
In earlier years, the movement — which combines elements of racism, anti-Semitism, and a general preference for nationalist strongmen over the candidates of either party — was mostly confined to the realm of dark web message boards, 4chan, and obscure blogs. About a year ago, they burst onto the scene and established a new home for themselves in Donald Trump’s campaign.

Breitbart News is the most prominent site for the Alt-Right.
The New York Times describes Breitbart News as a “curiosity of the fringe right wing”, with “ideologically driven journalists”, that is a source of controversy “over material that has been called misogynist, xenophobic and racist”, and is now a “potent voice” for Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign
Drumpf recently named chairman of Breitbart News – Stephen Bannon – his campaign CEO. A nasty man.
I’m depressed for Americans stuck in a nation with so many people willing to support the Alt-Right candidate. 😦
