7 days of Heroin

Cincinnati, Ohio.

July 10-16, 2017

18 deaths. At least 180 overdoses. A typical week. ☹️

We have to do everything we can to reduce the number of people addicted to hard drugs. Prescription painkillers should be limited.

Read the story. Watch the video on USA Today. It’s shocking.

Trump’s bungled the Drug Czar portfolio as he’s bungled so many things. I think it’s Jim Carroll in charge, right now.

German youth against the Nazis – “Swing Kids”

The Swing Youth (GermanSwingjugend) were a group of jazz and swing lovers in Germany in the 1930s, mainly in Hamburg and Berlin. …

… composed of 14 to 21-year-old boys and girls in high school, most of them middle- or upper-class students …

They admired the British and American way of life, defining themselves in swing music and opposing the National-Socialist ideology, especially the Hitler Youth …

Here are a couple of historical photos.

Ted Cruz – Hooker for the NRA

Ted Cruz took more money from the NRA than any other politician.

I’m not sure they’re getting their money’s worth. Despite being a smart, eloquent sleaze ball, he’s not all that convincing.

Catholics supported Hitler’s rise to dictator

Hitler had a minority government in 1933.

The Enabling Act (GermanErmächtigungsgesetz) was a 1933 Weimar Constitution amendment that gave the German Cabinet – in effect, Chancellor Adolf Hitler – the power to enact laws without the involvement of the Reichstag. …

The Enabling Act gave Hitler plenary powers. It followed on the heels of the Reichstag Fire Decree, which abolished most civil liberties …

The combined effect of the two laws was to transform Hitler’s government into a legal dictatorship. …

The Party of Catholics supported it.

Hitler negotiated with the Centre Party‘s chairman, Ludwig Kaas, a Catholic priest, finalising an agreement by 22 March. Kaas agreed to support the Act in exchange for assurances of the Centre Party’s continued existence, the protection of Catholics’ civil and religious liberties, religious schools and the retention of civil servants affiliated with the Centre Party.

As we know, the Catholic Church and Pope Pius XII did not do enough to challenge the Nazis or Mussolini.

Trump is not Hitler … but the Catholics supporting him reminded me of how Evangelical Christians support Trump.

Pastor John Pavlovitz calls out Christians who support Donald Trump:

“… It’s about my disbelief at your sudden tolerance for his infidelity, his cruelty, his intellectual ignorance, his disrespect for the rule of law—things you once claimed you could never abide. …

… my disappointment at your easily manipulated nationalistic fervor; how the God and Guns, America First, Love it or Leave it rhetoric … ”

Trump-Supporting Friend—This Really isn’t About Donald Trump

Jesus would denounce almost everything Trump says and does. I have no respect for any Christian who supports the hateful President.

it’s International Fact-Checking Day

After being fooled a number of times on April Fool’s Day, I’m ready for this.

change for the better in Saudi Arabia

I’ve been to Riyadh three times. They are leaders in the Muslim world. Many students study there before returning to their home nations.

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has started reforming the Kingdom.

Token changes: women driving, introducing music and cinema, and cracking down on corruption.

In a land of extremists, I hope he can stay alive long enough to move the nation to moderate Islam.

He’s certainly cooperated with (played?) the Toddler President.

Norah O’Donnell: Are women equal to men?

Mohammed bin Salman: Absolutely. We are all human beings and there is no difference.

Norah O’Donnell: You have said you are, “Taking Saudi Arabia back to what we were, a moderate Islam.” What does that mean? …

He has curbed the powers of the country’s so-called “religious police,” who until recently were able to arrest women for not covering up. …

60 Minutes

He has critics. One guy wants him to change more, faster.

Others say he’s been too brutal. A strongman dictator.

Archie Bunker on gun control

Norman Lear was the famously left wing genius behind the ground breaking All in the Family comedy satire.

Trump is STILL Archie Bunker. A dinosaur from the past. Lear partly based the character on his father Herman.

I’m done with Mr. Robot

Season 3 is still getting great reviews.

Though I loved the previous seasons …  I’ve had enough.

The first half of season 3 was confusing and muddled. The actors are excellent … so I blame the script writers. They didn’t seem to know where they were going with Phase 2.

Season 3 improves through to the dramatic finale. But it’s not enough for this viewer.

The only actor I like more in season 3 than previous was Tyrell Wellick played by Martin Wallström.  So weird. So believable.

Mr. Robot has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for and won multiple awards.

But I’m not the only viewer fading on the series.

Season 4 has been green lit.

Designated Survivor (season 1)

It’s sappy. It’s not going to win any awards for acting.

Still … I’m going to download season 2.

The premise is fascinating. The plot engaging. I did get hooked.

They do a good job of leaving a cliff hanger end of each episode.

In a world with a Toddler President this alternative looks pretty good.

Tom Kirkman

Designated Survivor is an American political drama …

I never particularly liked Kiefer Sutherland in the past. But he’s quite good as “Tom” Kirkman, the independent President of the United States.

My favourite character is Kal Penn as Seth Wright, a speechwriter who quickly becomes one of his closest advisors and the new White House Press Secretary.

Maggie Q as Hannah Wells, is impressive too.

Also LaMonica Garrett as Secret Service Agent Mike Ritter.
