Canada 6th at World Gymnastics Championships

mqual_canteam6162.jpgEveryone happy happy about the best ever performance of the Canadian men’s team at Worlds. It’s no fluke. These guys are good.

Five of seven team members are from Alberta.

Kyle Shewfelt added to his medal collection with a Bronze on Floor Exercise and the first Canadian female gymnast medalled at the Worlds — Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs on beam.

exercising while travelling

The worst part of travel is the inconsistency of exercise and food. You have far more control over your life at home.

I would like to be riding a bike to a gymnastics gym (or weight room) but — instead — I’m jogging to playgrounds.

This one (VitaCourse) in Vegas is of the best playground gyms I’ve found.

video – diving bloopers

Summer is over. This is already nostalgia for me.

Those who can’t do, teach.

After a long gymnastics camp, we coaches recreated at the swimming pool, mistiming every dive we could dream up.

PEI hospitality

Jim and Lea Rand were my most excellent hosts in PEI.

I enjoyed fresh baking, ate surf and turf. We toasted marshmallows and poured Bailey’s into the melted centres. Mmmm.

The family has it’s own beach volleyball court and games were very competitive.

Jim, spiker right, has been running the gym in Charlottetown for 31 years. He’s 2 years retired from teaching and now can devote himself full-time to gym and home construction projects.

Lea is still working two jobs. : )

The club is planning their first ever trip to a Japanese gymnastics meet.

This was the last post on this travelogue. It’s back to Calgary after over 4 weeks on the road.

St. Paul, MN

I’ve visited the capital of Minnesota several times over the years, always enjoying the quiet, picturesque city.

The wide streets, big trees and lovely architechture remind me a bit of Winnipeg, Manitoba, not far to the north.

This time I was here for the USA Gymnastics Championships, hosted at the Xcel Energy Center, home of the Minnesota Wild hockey team. I was impressed. The venue, the city, and the organizing committee (with whom I had drinks) were all fantastic.

Woodward West Sport Camp, California

I coached 3 weeks at Woodward in 2005.

This summer I stopped in for 3 days, a goodwill ambassador from Cirque du Soleil.

It was great to get reacquainted with so many of the same coaches and camp staff from the previous year.

Woodward.jpg

Woodward West is a HUGE camp, half boys, half girls. They offer gymnastics and cheer, as well as some trampoline, tumbling and acrosport.

The Action Sports offered: BMX, mountain biking, skateboard and in-line skating.

It is one fantabulous place!

Mismo Gymnastics, Missoula, Montana

I finally got to visit Mismo 4-years after I first met unforgettable Head Coach and owner Kelley Durbin. It’s a great gym in every way.

Kelley and Morgen gave us a tour of the facility and program – then took us to dinner at the Iron Horse Brew Pub. Great grub!

I’ll meet up with Kelley at the USA Gymnastics Championships in August.

gymnastics camp photos

One of my favourite events of the year is the HPTC camp in Idaho hosted by Dave Adlard.

Dave.jpg

At the end of camp all coaches are lined-up against a wall in front of a firing squad of gymnasts. Contest winners get to “pie” any coach. Here Bobby launches a sneak attack at Dave. It was brilliant.

Check out over 80 pictures of camp on Flickr.

Video clips of coaches getting a pie in the face.

why I go to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

Not for the gym camp. But all the grilled lamb chops I can eat!

I finally got a US$25 Flickr Pro account. After years of hosting my own photos, it’s time I moved to a web host. I will add more photos to this set over the next couple of weeks — easy to do in Flickr.
