why I can’t live in the Maritimes … or Italy

Much as I like Halifax, living in the Maritimes is a non-starter for me. (Sorry Anne.)

smoker-and-childWhy?

Too many smokers.

It’s disgusting.

As I toured Nova Scotia, one Tim Hortons to the next, I had to push my way through nicotine addicts lurking at each entrance. Yeesh.

Why can’t those Maritimers go work their short-term Summer jobs as mandated by pogie?

I fled the second hand smoke for Italy.

Doh!

Italy is even WORSE. (Remind me not to travel to Cuba.)

And why am I even in Italy? I’m one of the few people you know who doesn’t want to travel in Italy. It’s the last place I wanted to go … last except for the land of the cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

My Mom reminded me of my only other trip to Italy, over 30yrs ago. I wrote her this on a postcard:

… “Italy is Great…too bad it is run by Italians” …

Italian men back in 1976 were totally irritating.

Happily I can report they’ve improved over the past few decades.

In fact, it seems the young Italian men have collectively opted into a 1980s George Michael look-alike contest. Pretty funny. I don’t speak Italian, but I’d estimate at least 6 million young men, so far, have voluntarily joined into this amusing competition.

It’s great to see that those (formerly) arrogant pricks are now able to laugh at themselves.

The detested Italian machismo seems to be fading.

Of course I’m in Italy for hiking. It was a complete surprise to me. One minute I was searching the internet for cheap flights to Iceland. The next I’d bought a $100 ticket Gatwick to Venice.

Here I am in Bolzano, no guidebook. It’s like the blind leading … myself.

Fortunately 6 of my 10 words of Italian from the distant past have returned to me.

Oh, … I should add that there are only 2 good smokers in the World. And one of them is trying to quit.

dreaming of Iceland …

I posted this on my hiking blog yesterday. One of the most charming music videos I’ve ever seen.

I tried and failed to find a very inexpensive flight from Eastern Canada to Iceland. Unfortunately it’s very high season there.

This evocative music video inspired me.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Exotic. Ethereal. Stark. … And very weird.

If you’re looking for inspiration to visit watch Glósóli by Icelandic band Sigur Rós. They are the second most famous band out of Iceland.

That’s Iceland.

The music reminds many of Arcade Fire from Canada.

But this is sigur rós, a rock band from Iceland.

glósóli, shot in iceland in august 2005. the video is directed by icelanders arni & kinski and features a cast of icelandic children. …

iPhone 3GS – What it means to Canadians

From Amber MacAurthur, geek babe:

On June 8th, 2009, news of a faster and cheaper iPhone made headlines. This latest release includes new enhancements such as a built-in camcorder, longer battery life, and voice control. The camera is now 3 megapixels, which will increase the quality of photos substantially, and on the camcorder side, you can trim videos you shoot simply by using your finger. Apple calls this 3GS, “the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet,” with up to 32GB of storage. Most importantly, this time around, Canadians will not be left behind.

Rogers has confirmed that, along with Fido, they will be launching the new 16GB and 32GB Apple iPhone 3GS on June 19th. The prices are $199(16GB) and $299(32GB), both will be available in black or white. The existing iPhone 3G (8GB) will be for sale for just $99 (on a three year voice and data contract). If you don’t want to sign a contract, that is also an option. Rogers and Fido will, once again, be offering the $30/6GB plan for iPhone customers for a limited period.

On the software side, both iPhone 3GS and 3G users will be able to download a free update, which includes the much desired cut, copy, and paste, among dozens more additional features.

Insofar as tethering, which allows you to share your iPhone internet connection with your computer, Rogers will support this feature for existing models and new models of the iPhone on both brands.

All of this news is refreshing for Canadian iPhone lovers. No longer will we have to sneak across the border to get our Apple phone fix or gaze into the eyes of proud iPhone owners on YouTube. Instead, we’ll be sharing the features of this year’s sexiest phone around the same time as the rest of the world.

Gizmo Diva – The iPhone 3GS – What it means to Canadians

The app I’m most interested in is the new Accuterra … Must Have iPhone App for Hikers.

Rick is history at Altadore

Last August I went back to my old gymnastics club as interim Technical Director … for 4-8 weeks.

May 30th, 9 months later, I’m finally returning to semi-retirement.

My 22nd season at Altadore Gymnastics is history.

It was a good year, overall. But my personal philosophy and life goals are incompatible with a 50hr, 6-day-a-week intense job.

I had not enough time and/or energy to do much aside from WORK all Winter. Life is too short for that.

I’m en route to Death Valley, California for hiking as this is posted. (I scheduled it to publish in the future.)

No doubt I’ll be back at Altadore in future. More history.

I’m staying on as volunteer consultant to the Board and Staff.

first hike of the Summer …

I was looking for a good first hike of the season. And a chance to test my full set of gear.

My original plan of scrambling Ha Ling, then wild camping, was abandoned after I heard about a better option from local hiker Kelly Mock.

In fact, I walked out Kelly’s front door directly to the trailhead and up the mountain …
