Randy McCharles published

My brother had an award winning novella selected for Tor’s annual best of Fantasy fiction.

Twenty-eight doses of wonder. From the distant past to the present day, from Antarctica and Mars to worlds that never were, the tales in this book bring news from nowhere-and everywhere. Fantasy is a mode of storytelling, a method of entertainment, a mode of argument, and a way of seeing. Here, presented by two of the most distinguished anthologists of the day, are twenty-eight stories that see, tell, argue, and entertain.

Congrats, Bro.

It’s got an odd title for a work of fantasy: “Ringing in the Changes in Okotoks, Alberta”. (Good press for Okotoks.)

Despite that, fans across Canada voted it BEST SHORT-FORM WORK IN ENGLISH. … How do I nominate it for the Auroras and the Hugos ??

Coincidentally, when he was getting his award in Montreal, he received a second special award as organizer of the 2008 World Fantasy convention in Calgary.

This is Randy’s second publication by Tor, I think. The first was Tesseracts Twelve.

WestJet adds Calgary – Maui direct

I was already happy when they added Mazatlan, as that’s where I’ve been getting dental work done.

Starting October 2nd my favourite airline flies direct to Hawaii.

Haleakala

WestJet to launch non-stop flights to Hawaii from Calgary, Edmonton

And … since snow is due to fly … I’m thinking quite a bit about Hawaii.

Calgarians have many choices for their sun destination vacations this winter, with WestJet offering non-stop service to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, Ixtapa, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, San Diego, Orlando and Nassau.

Thanks Tam.

have you seen Glee?

I heard a great interview with Matthew Morrison, star of the Fox TV series Glee.

Click PLAY or watch the trailer on YouTube.

Leave a comment if you have an opinion on Glee. I’m really enjoying it.

You can watch recent episodes in Canada on Global. Watch recent episodes in the USA on Fox.

On iTunes, Season 1 (13 episodes) costs only $13.95.

new TV show – FlashForward

It’s based on a novel by Canadian author Robert J. Sawyer published in 1999.

The new TV series is getting good buzz and looks to be a keeper.

Series Premiere: Thursday, September 24th, 2009. 8/7c on ABC.

Click PLAY or watch a promo on YouTube.

The full premiere episode can be watched online on ABC … IF you live in the USA. I can’t find it available online from Canada. (Me thinks I need to go to Hawaii to watch it.)

I’m a big fan of Robert J. Sawyer. The only way he’ll ever make much money, however, is if his books are used for TV and movies.

Sawyer is a good friend of my brother Randy who tells me that ABC expects a 5yr run of the TV show. The plan is that it will replace LOST in their lineup.

CTV.ca will stream it online free for Canadians.

Boingo made good on my problem – THANKS

Boingo Wireless is a private American company that provides wireless communication services, specifically Wi-Fi. ..

Though signup is seamless, canceling the service requires a call into customer retention.

Wikipedia

In the past, traveling in North America, I have used Boingo. And enjoyed the service. It works well … though I often cannot find one of their Boingo hotspots when I need one.

A sales rep talked me into subscribing again for my Summer trip to Europe. It was very reasonably priced:

July – CAD$23.82

August – CAD$22.17

But when I got home and checked my online bank statement, here’s what I had been charged for September:

boingo-overcharging-me

What’s with that?

I’ll blog first, ask questions later. And update this post with their response.

=== UPDATE

David Almaraz from Boingo got back to me right away.

He says I have a Boingo AsYouGo plan, “Wi-Fi for the next 24 hours at each hotspot for $19.95.”

I signed up over the phone with a rep that recommended a monthly fee plan that included Europe. At least, that’s what I recall. Boingo sent me no email confirmation.

As you know, I would never sign up for a $20 / hook-up fee. It was a mistake on their part. Or an accident on my part.

My advice to the World Wide Web is to be very, very careful about charges if you sign on with Boingo. They are not very transparent about charges.

I will not use Boingo again.

==== second update:

Lauren Sanyal from Boingo followed up:

The last thing we ever want is for our customers to be unhappy. We focus on outstanding customer service every day, and we appreciate the opportunity to attempt to make things right! To be absolutely clear, I will try to explain what happened.

It looks like, on May 25, 2008, you signed up for our Boingo Unlimited monthly subscription plan for $9.95 USD for the first three months and $21.95 USD per month thereafter. On September 11, 2008, you contacted Customer Care and changed your plan to Boingo AsYouGo. The Boingo AsYouGo description states: “Enjoy Boingo Wi-Fi for the next 24 hours at this hotspot for just $7.95 USD. Future connections will be billed at just $7.95 USD per connection at individual hotspots within North and South America, $9.95 USD per connection at individual hotspots in Asia/Pacific, and $19.95 USD per connection at individual hotspots in Europe, Middle East, and Africa.” Since you changed your plan over the phone, this may not have been made explicitly clear.

Instead of changing your plan to a global subscription, which would have been more appropriate given your travel plans, the Customer Care agent you spoke with switched your account to Boingo AsYouGo. I’m sorry to hear that you were given the impression that you would receive one month of global Wi-Fi access for $19.95 USD per month. In fact, the price you were quoted is the cost of one AsYouGo connect in Europe. Our global subscription plan, Boingo Global, provides 2,000 minutes of Wi-Fi access across the globe for $59 USD per month.

I sincerely regret that you had a confusing experience with us as a result. Also, we’re so sorry to hear that you feel we weren’t being straight with you; we work hard to be transparent and forthright with our customers. If you’d like to view your receipts and usage online, please visit https://my.boingo.com to access your account anytime.

As a courtesy, we have refunded $99.75 USD to your account. Quick note – since you created your Boingo account in the US, I have been discussing these charges in USD. However, your refund will appear in CAD on your bank statement. I sincerely hope you’ll give us another chance. Finally, if there’s anything else we can do to help you reach a satisfactory resolution, please let me know.

That is fantastic customer service, so far as I’m concerned.

Suddenly I am a huge fan of Boingo. And will give the service another try on my Fall travels.

Certainly there was some confusion:

“On September 11, 2008, you contacted Customer Care”

I was traveling in Spain on that date. My laptop in Glasgow.

Certainly it was not me that contacted Customer Care.

hmmm

Up in the Air starring George Clooney

Two of my favourite movies of recent years:

Thank you for Smoking

Juno

They were the first two feature films of Jason Reitman, son of comedy director and actor Ivan Reitman.

Reitman describes his production company’s goal as being to produce “small subversive comedy that is independent but accessible”.

I’m really looking forward to his third major film, Up in the Air. Clooney is …

… Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles and just after hes met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams. …

Click PLAY or watch the trailer on YouTube.

One knock against Reitman, he’s a Vancouver Canucks fan.

cheap flights to Iceland

This is the first seat sale I’ve seen for Iceland since I started tracking those flights months ago. I guess the “high season” finally ends October 1st.

To Reykjavík from: Berlin, Copenhagen, London Gatwick, London Stansted and Warsaw.

Prices from: €69, £55, … one-way including taxes and fees.

When to buy: Open for sale from 14 CET (that’s 1pm UK time) until midnight tonight, Monday 21 September.

When to fly: From 1 October to 10 December 2009.

That’s with Iceland Express, the supposedly low cost airline.

Iceland

I like Iceland Express better than full service Iceland Air, a company that treated me, a potential customer, very badly over the past few months.

Coldplay Live – a review

Fantastic!

Of the 40,000 people who spent up to 7hrs in an open arena on a Wednesday night in Glasgow, I doubt you could find one who would disagree. They are better live than recorded.

The amazing thing is that Coldplay could become ever become a huge stadium draw. Their music is … mellow. Boring, I called it, when the band first became popular.

Lead singer Chris Martin admitted, “we really don’t have very many good songs. If we had written Wonderwall, we’d play it right now for you.” He’s very understated and self effacing in that charming British way.

U2, by comparison, has 30 songs, bigger and better known than any of the Coldplay “hits”. More appropriate stadium anthems.

Improbably, Coldplay delivers. Best I thought was Yellow.

Click PLAY or watch Yellow live in Tokyo on YouTube.

Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah, they were all yellow.

I came along,
I wrote a song for you,
And all the things you do,
And it was called “Yellow”.

The original TV edit for Yellow Coldplay calls their “cheapest & best video”. The band is not known for great music videos, however.

This is the Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends tour, backing up their 2008 album produced by Brian Eno. I’m looking forward to the concert video that was shot June 20-21, 2009 in Vancouver.

Though Chris Martin is front man and clearly the “star”, the band shares profits equally, as do U2 and R.E.M. They’ve also agreed that anyone using hard drugs will be fired.

Coldplay turned down multi-million dollar contracts from Gatorade, Diet Coke, and Gap because those specific deals might denigrate the specific songs requested.

===

Mr. Beyoncé, Jay-Z, was one of the back-up bands. He’s not as well known nor as popular in the U.K. as in the States.

Jay-Z is smart, talented and a survivor in a tough musical genre.

He’s trying to push rap into the future. With a big, talented band, and complexity of song construction something like Jazz. A tight act. But my theory is that rap really has nowhere to go. It was perfected early on by bands like NWA, and we’ve only seen a few interesting variations since.

This positive review is surprising coming from me. I dislike live entertainment. And HATE standing up for hours at a rock concert.

Happily I was able to sit for Coldplay. By luck I had the perfect seat. I sat too for all of the last stadium concert I saw, R.E.M some dozen years ago.

Apple the new Evil Empire

Steve-JobsLeo Laporte:

At least the trains run on time.

Leo Laporte was elected President of the Internet.

Certainly our President should either be Leo or Tom Merritt. The are the two BIG PICTURE internet experts I admire most.

Both Leo and Tom … and everyone else I follow on the WWW agree that Apple IS the new Evil Empire.

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”

Apple is riding high right now. But when the Empire falls, as it inevitably does, management will look back to this era with some regret. Now is the time to be making friends and building partnerships, not crushing competition.

appstore_hero20080909

I’m still riding the Apple train. None of the others run on time.

… No one is afraid of Microsoft any longer. MS was formerly the Evil Empire for their frequent crushing or buying competitors to maintain as big a monopoly as possible. And for lying bald faced to one and all.

Apple 3rd generation iPod Shuffle

Love it. Love it. Love it.

But only because of the proprietary Apple headphones system added with the 3rd generation.

Click PLAY or watch a review on YouTube.

My only complaint is the 10hr battery life. That’s much shorter than my iTouch used only for audio.

The feature Apple doesn’t explain on their website is this:

• Double-click and hold the center button to fast-forward
• Triple-click and hold the center button to rewind

Macintouch

Essential for audio books and podcasts.

Now, Steve, when can you sell me an iPod with decent wireless headphones?
