Keith Russell – Best Professor

My curmudgeonly mentor was named Best Professor at University of Saskatchewan 2010 in some dubious free local magazine called Planet S.

I attribute his win to the fact that he only infrequently appeared at his own lectures, instead traveling the world in his role as chair of the International Gymnastics Federation Sport Science Committee.

I’ll nominate him for grumpiest professor in next year’s poll.

Sarah Palin not guilty, for once

President Palin is a reckless menace. But to blame the shooting of tragic shooting in Tucson of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 19 others by an Army trained a deranged kook is taking it too far, even for me.

Here’s the graphic posted on her Facebook last year. It targets Gabrielle Gifford’s Arizona district.

She’s all unrepentant bluster. The closest I’ve seen to a renunciation of the killings was in an email to Glenn Beck:

“I hate violence. I hate war. Our children will not have peace if politicos just capitalize on this to succeed in portraying anyone as inciting terror and violence. Thanks for all you do to send the message of truth and love. And God has the answer. – Sarah”

This tragedy is not a reason to shun candidate Palin.

The reason not to vote for her is that her IQ is too low for the job. She’s neither quick witted enough nor diplomatic enough to be President. And as her administration flounders, she’ll gladly take the USA to another unWINable war that the US taxpayers can’t afford.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” reality TV show will be canceled after the first season. And she will fade into Fox News pundit oblivion.

UP … the movie

Up is a 2009 computer-animated comedy-adventure film produced by Pixar …

The film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with a rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes (the best reviewed wide-released film of 2009 on the site), and grossed over $731 million worldwide …

This was the third time I’ve watched it, a perfect film where I cannot find a single scene or frame to delete.

Many feel this is the best scene. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Seagate sold me pirated movies

Today I bought a FreeAgent® GoFlex™ Ultra–portable Drive from FutureShop.

It came preloaded with pirated Hollywood movies.

Of course I’m outraged.

Somebody is stealing food from Brad Pitt’s baby.

I’ll head back to FutureShop to register my outrage. And to ask why they are encoded in a crappy .wmv format.
🙂

_____

After returning and replacing that drive, the next had exactly the same movies!

Turns out they are preinstalled, encrypted … and cost $10 or more to unlock. Bleh.

Most Canadians don’t plan to retire: survey

And I thought I was the only one. …

What used to be called retirement will be just another day at the office for more than a third of Canadians, who say they’ll need to keep working to pay the bills, a survey suggests.

The survey conducted by Harris/Decima on behalf of Scotiabank indicates nearly 70 per cent of Canadians plan to work after retirement.

People cited different reasons for staying in the workforce. Seventy-two per cent said they want to remain mentally active, and 57 per cent want to stay socially active. Thirty-eight per cent of those surveyed said they’ll be working out of financial necessity. …

winter cycling Saskatoon

Today I rode in to the University with Warren Long, a surprisingly challenging 30min trip.

In fact, one of my sudden stops resulted in Warren crashing into me. (I came out the better on the collision.)

I had his winter bike with a studded front tire. He rode his summer bike with regular tires. The studs really help on mixed snow and black ice.

Borders might go bankrupt

The book-seller Borders may become the first casualty of a changing publishing industry. According to reports, the company has been delaying payments to book publishers in order to help refinance its debt.

Borders is the second largest book retailers in the U.S., after Barnes & Noble, but even so, Borders says “there can be no assurance” that these refinancing efforts will be successful in keeping the company afloat. …

Why?

… It isn’t simply a downturn in the economy or in the publishing world that has put Borders in trouble. Unlike Barnes & Noble and Amazon, Borders has not built its own e-reader hardware. …

separated at birth

Rockin’ Ronnie:

About 25 years ago, my old friend Rocco Ciancio noticed a picture in the Calgary Herald that reminded him of a photo of me on my wedding day. Uncanny resemblance, don’t you think?

Which was the wedding day, again?
