Cynthia runs a Marathon

Cynthia — a woman of a certain age — with no experience in distance running — got it into her head to run a Marathon. In France.

She and a friend put in the training. And met their goal. Congratulations.

Saskatoon …

I’m back for the second time in my second city, Saskatoon. The guest of Warren and Sandy.

Autumn weather in the Prairies is most impressive close to sunset.

Yesterday we dropped K off at Merrill Dunes Paintball. Boys and their toys.

dinner with Kolodziejzyks

Helen and Greg Kolodziejzyk treated me to a fine salmon dinner at the Beach Club Resort, Parksville. … If Greg looks a touch manic, it’s cuz he just ran the West Coast Trail. 3 bears, more falls, … and no small risk of hypothermia.

THANKS guys. See you at an adventure down the road.

swimming with Kokanee salmon

A completely landlocked population of Sockeye salmon is known as “Kokanee“, their name in the Okanagan language.

As youth, myself and Rockin’ Ronnie snorkeled with the Kokanee in Kokanee Creek. An amazing spectacle.

After spawning, the huge fish waste away and die. Unmindful of teenagers snorkeling beside them.

Here’s a salmon in death throes. (VIDEO)

Over the past couple of decades I’ve noticed fewer and fewer spawning Kokanee in that creek.

But the Gerrard rainbow trout are making a comeback in Kootenay Lake. I’m hopeful that conservation efforts are helping the Kokanee, as well.

Fingers crossed …

Kate loves cabbies

Kate Rates & Berates:

… Most cabbies put us to shame in terms of their level of industry. We met one who was working three jobs and exercising daily — it was embarrassing to be driven around by such an enterprising character. …

Shiro on Vancouver Island

My old coach, Shiro Tanaka, brought Japanese friends to Canada for a gymnastics study tour. They are visiting clubs in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary — and holidaying in-between.

Hardy and Cynthia hosted them at their place on Sproat Lake, Vancouver Island. I was chauffeur.

It’s paradise.

1st night in Canada

Next morning Hardy skippered the group to local highlights.

Great start to the Canadian tour. 🙂
