Fort Duque de Caxias, Copacabana

What do you do in Copacabana when the weather is lousy?

IMG_0821

Walk to the end of Leme beach to visit one of the two forts.

Here’s how it looks from the air.

Ft Duque de Caxias

I was the only tourist there late in the afternoon.

Young people pay a small entrance fee for the military base. Then it’s about a 20min climb up to the gates of the historic fort.

It reminded me of Fort Worden, Port Townsend, Washington.

There’s the cablecar to Sugarloaf.

Good views back down to the beach.

And to the Babylon favela where I’m staying.

Iguazu Bird Park, Brazil

Just beside famed Iguazu Falls is Parque das Aves.

toucans

50% are rescue birds. The noisy parrots reminded me of the World Parrot Refuge in Coombs, B.C.

43% were born in the Park.

It’s not Jurong Bird Park in Singapore, but Parque das Aves is bloody good. The best bird park in Latin America.

It poured rain while I was there. I walked briskly between exhibits to keep warm. Sadly my own photos turned out wet & blurry.

Read Trip Advisor reviews.

Finally. Iguazu Falls, Brazil.

Having visited Victoria Falls in 2014 – and rafting the Zambezi below the Falls – I was quite sure Iguazu could not compete.

Happily I was wrong.

Iguazu is even better for the tourist. Though both Falls are astonishingly otherworldly, you get closer in Brazil.

Rick at Iguazu

Unhappily it poured tropical rain. I was soaked, cold and wind blown. I had to keep moving just to stay warm.

The highlight here is walking out into the middle of the Falls.

Yes those walkways have been washed out in the past.

Here’s how it look on a sunny day.

I wished I’d been here in the early days of tourism. 🙂

If you haven’t been to Iguazu, put it on your Bucket List 🙂

Visit both sides. When I tried to cross the border into Argentina officials insisted I needed to pay a special $90+ visa – in advance – printed and in hand – for a visit of just a few hours. No exceptions.

I walked back across the bridge into Brazil. 😦

flying within Brazil

When I used Google Matrix Airfare Search – the best search engine – a ticket on the Rio Iguazu tourist route shows at US$426 or more one way.

Brazilians pay US$77 for the same 2 hour flight.

I ended up flying both ways for the Brazilian fare. It’s quite a bit cheaper than the bus.

To do so you need buy your ticket online without admitting you live in Canada. Using a Brazilian phone number, for example. Avoid filling in the Brazilian CPF (social security number). Leave that blank, if you can.

Promenade Verano Stay – Rio

Very expensive for me at over US$60 / night, I enjoyed staying at Promenade Verano Stay.

The Olympic Gymnastics venue is 1.6km distant. The only problem was crossing this busy highway. A pedestrian walkway should be completed in time for the Olympics.

I ate almost exclusively at one restaurant about half way between my apartment and the Gym.

woe is Brazil

I’m in an affluent part of Rio hanging out with Olympians. Life is good.

But this nation has big problems.

Barra da Tijuca will host most of the venues of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. … including all the Gymnastics disciplines at Cidade Olimpica.

It’s not at all finished. And, just a few months before the Games, I wandered the place alone, very few workmen to be seen.

I’m not at all confident this place will be ready. They should be working 24/7 on it right now.

Norte Grill Churrascaria, Rio de Janeiro

North Grill Steakhouse near Olympic City provides me a full buffet meal with desserts for less than C$10.

Plenty of choices. Great barbecue. 🙂

I typically have whatever is hot off the grill. Sushi with the fixin’s. Ham & cheeses. Fried garlic. Hummus. I try to resist dessert. Not all that many vegetables … I am paying by the 100gm. 🙂

111 possessions

Rob Greenfield:

At the age of 29, I now own fewer possessions than I’ve ever owned in my entire life. After years of downsizing I have achieved one of my long-sought-after goals of being able to fit everything I own into a backpack that fits comfortably on my back. …

Imagine being able to do a push-up with every single item that you own on your back!

One possession that I will likely own again in the future is a bicycle as well as basic cycling gear. …
