what does Google have against photos? – Picasa

UPDATE: Warren showed me how he uses Picasa for Windows. The desktop app (which is NOT available for Mac) works very well. The only downside is that it takes up a lot of hard disk space.

I thought they wanted to organize all the world’s information.

Google has a great product in Google Videos. And also bought YouTube. They are by far the biggest player in internet video.

Google is clearly committed to video.

But why is their photography software so lame? Yahoo is killing them with both Flickr and Yahoo photos.

Google’s photo software is called Picasa:

Find, organise and share your photos.

… a free software download from Google that helps you:

* Locate and organise all the photos on your computer.
* Edit and add effects to your photos with a few simple clicks.
* Share your photos with others through email, prints and on the web: it’s fast, easy and free.

Windows XP only

Microsoft Windows 2000/XP

Picasa

Is it XP only? Google has been very confused on this product.

Fact is, Mac users can also store photos on Google though you would not know it from the Picasa home page.

I tried it. And was disappointed.

Flickr had just announced unlimited uploads and storage for photos for US$25 / year.

Picasa gives you only 6Gb for $25 / year.

Warren Long uses both Picasa and Flickr for different things. But between the two, Flickr is far superior.

Warren takes great photos.

Saskatoon had record snow this Fall. Aaron Reynolds decided to flood the lake in front of their Emma Lake cabin to make a smooth hockey rink. Warren captured this image:

See 69 of Warren’s photos from the fun fest that was the New Year’s weekend 2006 at Emma Lake, Saskatchewan.

Or check out Warren’s photos from LAST New Year’s weekend (2005).

I had a great time, as always. It was good to catch-up with many of my Saskatchewan friends.

Happy 2007!

“Russian Wooden Highscraper”

Today we have hand made stories. Another one is submitted by Timo.

This one is really strange. It is a wooden multi-stored building. It looks like a real skyscraper in Arkhangelsk city. All the houses in the town are mainly two- three- stored and here it stands – a twelve stored wooden tower, more than 120 ft high (38 metres).

There is not elevator and you can reach the top of the building climbing by a carved wooden stairs.

The building can be seen from all the town. The city authorities claim that the building spoils the town view and demand to reduce it by… 10 stores. But he refuses. He really likes his creation and most of the local people think that it looks nice.

New Year’s predictions

In the future people without blogs will be as rare as people who don’t use email today.

128px-Feed-icon.svg.pngConsider RSS, for example. This is a fantastic resource brings virtually any kind of information you can think of to your desktop. Nevertheless, recent research shows that only 1 in 10 people have even heard of the term and a mere two percent actually use it.

OK, RSS is geeky you say? Fair enough. But consider that several studies conducted by the Pew Internet Center for American Life reveal that millions lurk but don’t publish. For example, only 35% of Americans post their photos online and only eight percent have ever published a blog.

Of course by then spammy email, as we know it now, will be gone. Replaced by some variation of instant messaging.

Merry Christmas from the Longs

… Keiran is now in Grade 3.

He really likes school, for which we are grateful. He is a confident kid and was one of only five boys in a 60 member school junior choir. This fits in well with his future plans of becoming a rock star.

He also wanted to try Tae Kwon Do this year, so he’s doing that along with soccer and gymnastics. The deal was he wasn’t allowed to whine about being too busy, and so far so good.

We have had a chance to do a few things over the past year. The three of us went skiing all by ourselves in Banff and Lake Louise in March. As we usually go with a big group, this was a new experience. I think skiing is an awesome family holiday. It was on this same trip that Keiran decided expensive steak was his new favorite restaurant dinner. Sigh. …
