Imagewell, Snagit, Jing for Mac

I use “screen grab” software every day.

This image was created by Snagit:

There are many screen grab options on the Mac. But I’m happiest with Imagewell. It’s been free … until recently. I just dropped $14.95 to get the paid version. Money well spent, I feel.

Snagit and Jing are similar products, both free (for now). And both being developed by TechSmith.

Both have features not available with Imagewell. I’ll use them for special jobs, each perhaps 5 times / year.

Only Jing captures video.

A New History of Gospel Music

Kate and I were impressed by author Bob Darden interviewed on the CBC radio program Tapestry. (I immediately went and subscribed to the show as an audiocast.)

People Get Ready!: A New History of Gospel Music (2004) is a passionate, celebratory, and carefully researched chronology of one of America’s greatest treasures. From Africa through the spirituals, from minstrel music through jubilee, and from traditional to contemporary gospel, People Get Ready! shows the links between styles, social patterns, and artists.

The emphasis is on the stories behind the songs and musicians. …

simplifying legal jargon

Alan Siegel is my hero.

Tax forms, credit agreements, healthcare legislation: They’re crammed with gobbledygook, says Alan Siegel, and incomprehensibly long. He calls for a simple, sensible redesign — and plain English — to make legal paperwork intelligible to the rest of us.

our home in Loreto, Baja – Coco Cabanas

We stayed 9 nights. Life centers around the only heated / refrigerated pool in town.

official website

One of the U.S. owners, Steve, took good care of us. He was most welcoming and informative. Mucho Gracias.

Coco Cabañas is located in Loreto, Baja California, Mexico, one block from the Sea of Cortez and two blocks from downtown. All the fun excitement, shopping and dining is just minutes walking distance away

We have eight individual cabañas surrounding our quiet, palm landscaped courtyard. The courtyard features a pool in the center and a barbecue area to one side. Each cabaña has a fully furnished kitchen, dining area, air conditioning, TV with video library, ceiling fans, beds for one to three persons, bathrooms with showers and hot water. The covered patio porch with fan, chairs and table make the evenings most enjoyable

However long your stay, we will make your visit pleasurable. If you come to fish, dive, snorkel, hike, or just enjoy the natural beauties of Loreto, we can arrange your needs with the best people and places available.

With nightly rates of $89 and weekly of $553 (all taxes included / double occupancy), Coco Cabañas is your best choice with the best accommodations there is to offer.

Villages of Loreto Bay

Located seven miles south of the town of Loreto in Baja California Sur, the Villages of Loreto Bay is an 8,000-acre new urbanist development that strives to be North America’s largest sustainable resort development. At buildout—anticipated by 2020—the $3 billion project will include village neighborhoods constructed in nine phases primarily along the protected Loreto Bay on the Sea of Cortés. …

Sounds great. Looks fantastic.

The golf course is stunning.

… pedestrian-oriented villages will feature commercial services such as corner markets within walking distance, and a town center featuring a larger collection of retail uses a short walk from the neighborhoods …

The first question we asked is, “Where’s the parking?”

I love the concept. No cars. You must walk, bike or take your electric golf cart.

You’d spend a lot of time on your roof.

Now the bad news.

In February rumours of possible sale to a new owner were confirmed. The economy is terrible. Financing of the mega-project collapsed.

Construction continues. But it would be fair to say that the future of Loreto Bay is up in the air right now.

OK go – This Too Shall Pass

Here’s another version of the viral video by OK go. This is the official vid featuring a Rube Goldberg machine.

EMI made an exception to their normal (idiotic) rule not to allow their artists to embed videos. This has already been seen over 6 million times.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

OK go – new music video

EMI told OK go they weren’t allowed to embed video. EMI are idiots.

So OK go made a second music video of that song that I am able to embed here. Thanks guys! I want to promote your stuff. I’ll post it here, and link to this from Facebook and Twitter.

And I’ll continue to boycott EMI, as much as possible.

Coho ferry Victoria – Port Angeles

We took the Coho, a transportation option to Vancouver Island that I highly recommend.

The M.V Coho provides a scenic passage, linking Victoria, BC and Port Angeles, WA. We are a vehicle and passenger ferry, providing year round daily service …

If the name sounds familiar, perhaps you are remembering the story of the Millennium Bomber. Right wing Americans never tire of reminding us.

whistleblowers Cryptome are back online

I’d never heard of Cryptome until Microsoft slapped them down:

Since 1996, the whistleblower site Cryptome has been posting sensitive government and corporate documents. Now Cryptome has been stricken from the Web after releasing the “Microsoft Online Services Global Criminal Compliance Handbook“, a “spy guide” for law enforcement detailing what data Microsoft has, keeps, and can relinquish. …

MSNBC

Next day, Microsoft relented, withdrawing their complaint against the website. But still complaining that their property had been posted without permission.

I like whistleblower sites, therefore I like Cryptome. Check it out:Cryptome.org

why won’t you clean the fridge?

Recall when Bill Gates in 2002 announced he was going to reinvent the refrigerator?

Like most of his other announcements for Microsoft, Bill didn’t deliver. Finally here’s some good news:

… appliance makers like Whirlpool, Viking Range Corp. and Sub-Zero Inc. are tackling the messy fridge problem with a host of new features including souped-up shelves, bacteria-killing devices and better lighting. …

Is your fridge better or worse than this one?
