movie – Kite Runner – delayed

I read the book. Here was my review then:

Kahled HosseiniThe Kite Runner. 2003. Books set in Afghanistan are hot in 2006. This critically acclaimed example is a great eye-opener for those who do not know that part of the world, like myself. It is intense. Painful to read. It reminded me of A Separate Peace, by Knowles. By the last page, however, I was disappointed. Far too cliché and predictable. It is lame in the way formulaic TV movies are lame.

Still, I am very keen to see this important movie.

Author Khaled Hosseini has come out in support of a decision to delay the film version of his novel The Kite Runner over fears for the stars’ safety.

Studio Paramount Vantage has put the film back by six weeks, after three young Afghan actors said they could be targeted over a homosexual rape scene.

The studio has also arranged for three families to go and live abroad.

Hosseini said he “applauded” the decision. “Afghanistan has become a pretty violent place,” he added.

The overall message of the film is tolerance, love, friendship and forgiveness …

“If the boys and their families think there is a reasonable risk of threat to them, then you have to take all of the steps that you can to make sure they are okay,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper.

“I applaud the studio for delaying the release of the film even though it goes against whatever commercial wisdom there is.”

getting close – Panasonic HDC-SD5 camcorder

I am still shopping for a flash camcorder.

This may be it. I went down to look at one today.

The HDC-SD5 uses the AVCHD format to record full-HD video with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. …

The HDC-SD5, which records video onto SDHC/SD Memory Cards, debuts as the world’s smallest palm-style 3CCD full-HD camcorder. It is even smaller than its predecessor model, HDC-SD1, giving the SD5 superb portability. The SD5 also features a new USB Host function that significantly improves data storage and playback ease. With an optional newly released DVD burner (model VW-BN1), users can copy or play back video recordings in the original AVCHD format to deliver the ultimate high-definition viewing experience on a large-screen TV.

raise your Pacifico to Sr. Claussen

cervesapac.gif

One of the city fathers of Mazatlán, Mexico was German immigrant Jorge Claussen.

Indeed, my favourite walk in town is Paseo Claussen which he had blasted beneath icebox hill near the old town centre.

Jorge did much for this city, but today is best remembered for Pacifico Beer. It’s a workingman’s brew (i.e. burro urine) but I’ve always liked it.

You will not be surprised to learn there are a number of monuments in his memory including this one:

pacfico_monument.jpg… this homage to the Pacifico Beer Factory. This monument was unveiled on March 14, 2000, the hundredth anniversary of the day the brewery first began producing Pacifico beer.

The Pacifico brewery was founded by three German immigrants, Germán Evers, Emilio Philippi and Jorge Claussen. … The monument itself, which was designed by brewery workers, is a huge copper cooking vat capable of holding 24,000 liters (6336 gallons) of beer.

White Fang – the book

This past summer, a cheechako in the Yukon, I brought with me Jack London’s great novel White Fang as an audio book.

I had read it in my youth, but knew White Fang would get me into the Yukon.

London is no brilliant wordsmith, but his ability to put himself into the mind of a wolf dog is staggering. He must have watched these animals for weeks and months.

The book brings home the harsh violence of wilderness. And the even greater violence of supposedly-civilized humans.

White Fang is sold to the sadistic coward Beauty Smith who wagers on him in dog fights. (After reading this account, I’m hoping they send Michael Vick to prison.)

The book also explores themes of morality and redemption. There’s a happy ending with the long suffering wolf playing with his puppies.

White Fang is not as good as London’s The Call of the Wild, but they are both worth reading.

Facebook sucks …

If you are not using Facebook already, you probably will be soon. Your “friends” will insist.

It’s by far the best general social networking site and looks great compared with MySpace.

Yet once the novelty wears off and you actually want to use Facebook as an alternative to email, it blows.

Of the many Facebook Sucks posts I’ve read, this is the most succinct in laying out changes needed instantly!

• Changing the meaningless word of “Friend”
• removing the “is” in the status
• creating a fitler of people who are your real friends and provide a feed for that
• enabling a true photo management system like on Flickr. Same thing on video
• Stopping referring me to facebook to read messages and actually sending me my messages
• Letting me remove this confirmation panel each time i add someone as a friend
• letting me add/remove multiple people as friend
• providing knowledge paths between friends (like on linkedin)
• providing true people search
• providing unique URLs for anything
• providing a correct group management and alert system (new members, messages,..)

MYBLOG by Ouriel: What is Facebook waiting for…?

The ones in bold are particular pet peeves of mine.

There’s no way I can use the photo system in Facebook because it is so inferior to Flickr.

And Facebook had better hurry. The GOOGLE is coming to this party soon. (and I don’t mean crappy Orkut.) Many will be tempted to jump to “GoogleBook”.

I suspect Google did not buy Facebook because it is too gummed up in design. Better to start from scratch with a competitor that works far better.

Super Corn Me – the movie

I posted my distaste for the corn industry after hearing about the book The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan.

Corn is killing us.

Now in Super Size Me tradition is this movie:

hmmm – Smart cars

These Smart cars look cool. I am not surprised they were originally introduced by Swatch, the funky watch company.

But just how safe are they?

UPDATE: Check the comment below from George. An alarming video of a Dumb car crash.

smart.jpg

When Daimler-Chrysler announced the planned sale of Smart vehicles in the United States in 2008, a Forbes article claimed that the car is designed for tight European roads. North American roads are usually wider although city drivers may find a benefit of the Smart’s size. Fuel efficiency in the city is lower than the 5-seat Toyota Prius, though its highway fuel efficiency is higher. (However, the base price of the Prius is $22,175 (MSRP)(ref: autos.msn.com), compared to the Smart’s base model ‘Pure’ at under $12,000.

Safety

Smart vehicles use a very small front crumple zone. The main structure of the car is a stiff structure called a Tridion, which is designed to activate the crumple zones (if any) of a colliding vehicle.[13] This design creates a very strong safety cell around the passengers. However, it also subjects them to higher forces during an accident than in a conventional car.

Radiohead says f*** you to recording industry

Radiohead claim their groundbreaking decision to offer their latest album, In Rainbows, for any price consumers choose is paying off, proving the commercial viability of their direct-to-fans model.

read the details … Radiohead gamble pays off – Telegraph

Buy the new Radiohead albumIn Rainbows — digital tracks directly from the band. Pay what you want.

You can even get In Rainbows on vinyl LP if you wish. Let the marketplace decide, not record executives.

Next …

Less than a month after publicly calling executives at his music label unprintable names, rocker Trent Reznor has signaled that his days of working for a record label are over.

The only official member of the band Nine Inch Nails, Reznor announced Monday that the group is now a “free of any recording contract with any label.” Representatives from Reznor’s music label, Universal Music Group, were unavailable for comment.

Reznor provided few details in a note on the band’s Web site about how the group plans to proceed, but his announcement raised hopes among fans that he will follow the lead of British band Radiohead, which last week announced it would handle sales and distribution for its upcoming album, In Rainbows without the backing of a label.

Two well-known bands taking to the Internet to sell their own albums is not yet a trend, but it certainly must be a cause for concern in the halls of the four major music companies. The question raised by the defections is whether well-established performers need big music conglomerates in the digital age.

First Radiohead…now Nine Inch Nails bids adieu to music label

I’m keeping my fingers crossed this is a trend.

This is exactly what the idiots at the Record Industry Association of America deserve for suing their customers. ($222,000 for sharing old Foreigner tracks on-line – what?)

top 50 dystopian movies

Bit of a fan of the FUTURE GONE WRONG?

Here’s a list based on rankings on two websites: Rotten Tomatoes (RT) and the Internet Movie Database.

Massive dehumanization, totalitarian government, rampant disease, post-apocalyptic terrains, cyber-genetic technologies, societal chaos and widespread urban violence are some of the common themes in dystopian films which bravely examine the ominous shadow cast by future.

A dystopia is a fictional society that is the antithesis or complete opposite of a utopia, an ideal world with a perfect social, political and technological infrastructure. A world without chaos, strife or hunger. A world where the individual potential and freedom is celebrated and brought to the forefront.
