Chris in Dubai

Chris Baraniuk is coaching Cirque du Soleil’s first venture into the Middle East.

Infamous for brief, nay terse, (though prompt and reliable) email messages, his New Year’s letter home is insightful and most interesting:

Happy New Year. I hope you have a year of happiness.

Greetings from Dubai. As I sit at my laptop in my apartment, the noise of the construction on the building beside me is very loud. Construction stops only from 2 – 6 am.

Dubai has 15% of the world’s construction cranes. Judging from the brief travels I have taken, I do believe it. I have not seen an area that is not under construction.

Despite this, there are many fascinating things here in Dubai. Our apartments are almost on the beach. It is a tourist area with many hotels and apartments, and the beach is quite nice, blue clear water. Most of the tourists here are from Europe, and a large number of the new wealthy Russian class. Our apartments are considered 4 star, and are definitely luxury. I am not really sure how people can afford to come here as a tourist. But tourism and trade are the big money makers here.

Oil only accounts for about 10% of the economy. The leaders foresaw that the oil will run out, so they rapidly set the economy on a different path.

The buildings in Dubai are quite amazing, tall, slender, each seems unique. All seem at least 40 stories high. The world’s tallest building is under construction here, apparently it will be twice as high as the Empire State Building.

At Cirque we were told many things about how to dress, act, etc. while in Dubai. Most have proven to be false, as many people dress as they would in North America. Some women dress in traditional clothing. Very few women are covered except for their eyes. Of the people living here, only 10 % are from the Emirates. Everyone else is a foreign worker: either a labourer from India, Pakistan, Philippines, a hired professional expat, or a tourist.

There is shopping, shopping, and more shopping here. There are a large number of huge shopping malls. Our show site is on the parking lot of a big shopping mall. It has 5 different sections, each with a different geographical theme: Egypt, Persia, India, Tunisia and Andalusia. The Mall of the Emirates has an indoor downhill ski slope. It is probably worth trying….We are now in the middle of the Dubai Shopping Festival: 45 days of special sales….. Perhaps I can afford something if it is on sale…..

Yesterday I went to Dubai Creek, where the center of the city is and the older areas. There is an historic quarter with older houses that have wind towers to trap the air as a form of air conditioning. The weather now is quite pleasant: usually about 20-23. In the summer apparently it can get to about 40 – 45. In order to get to the older area, we took a boat across: about 33 cents. The boats are mostly for the workers to get back and forth. These are much more civilized that the boats that go across the river in Bangkok.

We visited the spice and gold souks yesterday: outdoor markets where you can buy spices: saffron, liquorice root, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks in big bags. Of course, all the vendors want you to buy from them: “for you, best price”. The gold market was row upon row of shops, an unbelievable assortment of usually over-the-top designs. Apparently gold is a good buy here. A friend looked at some diamond earrings. The vendor started at 2900 dirham, best price was 1900, and oh yes, best price again was 1700.

There are a huge assortment of cashmere scarves, shoes, and knock-off watches, handbags. The vendors on the street constantly in a low voice: fake watches, Rolex, handbags…. Two artists got pulled into a shop, the door locked and she left with a designer handbag for about $60.

It is interesting to see all the maps in books about Dubai. Most have all of these areas on the map, but it says u/c beside it, meaning under construction.

There are 3 big Palm Islands being constructed out in the ocean off the beaches. They dump sand in the ocean, let it settle and go from there. One of these is near out apartments. Unless you are very high up, you can’t really see that that is what is it is. You can however, from Google Earth. If you are interested…

Burj Al Arab: The world’s only “7 star” hotel. It gave itself the 7 stars. It apparently is a 5 star luxury. It is the shape of a sailboat. Taller than the Eiffel Tower, it is the world’s tallest hotel. It must be outrageously expensive. It is connected to the shore by a causeway. You have to pay about $ 100 just to walk across to see it. I doubt I will go.

There are numerous safari trips you can take out from the city: go riding camels, four wheeling, sand surfing, have an overnight trip.

So, so far Dubai has been a unique experience. I spent Christmas and New Year’s at Cirque parties by the beach, not at 20 below zero.

As unique as it is, I still miss home and all my friends. I hope you are doing well.

Take care

Chris

Merry Christmas to friends and family

mug2_2006.jpgHappy Holidays !!

Trust you are getting a change, a rest, some exercise. (A gift or two that you actually wanted.)

Year end update.

More of the same for me. I continue to focus on as few things as possible: gymnastics, hiking, fitness, travel, the internet.

2006 started with a family reunion in Mazatlán, travels through that country to Belize and Guatemala.

I made four different trips through the States this year. Still a love / hate relationship with the USA.

My new part-time work as a talent scout for Cirque du Soleil has taught me a lot. In fact I founded a gymnastics blog with a focus on other acrobatics sports including diving, sport acrobatics, circus, martial arts, X sports and more. It’s amazing what gymnasts can do.

My hiking website is doing great, as well. Certainly the best resource on the internet for those looking for the “best hike”.

I’ve been avidly following the wild, lawless internet where millionaires are literally made (and crushed) overnight. The future will be amazing. I am very optimistic My ruminations on the web (and other nonsense) I post on this, my personal blog.

That’s it.

Gone to Saskatoon for a catch-up with old friends over New Years. Then off to Australia in early January for a series of gymnastics conferences. Finally, some hiking in Tasmania.

And I’m waiting on Cirque for 2007 assignments. That is my highest priority right now.

Beatles LOVE – free preview of entire album

Old is new. The familiar reinvented.

A Beatles album — LOVE — is here just in time for Christmas.

I think it will be one of the biggest selling recordings of all time. You can listen to the entire album on-line free as part of the kickoff promotion. (I’m listening to it right now.)

Love (CD + Audio DVD)

Love (CD + Audio DVD)

This is part of the astonishing Beatles collaboration with Cirque du Soleil.

A far more eloquent review than I could write:

I’ve been listening to the Beatles’ soundtrack to their Cirque du Soleil project, called “Love,” all weekend and loving it.

… the CD should really be called “George Martin Presents the Beatles in ‘Love.’” because Martin — who produced just about everything the Beatles ever recorded — is the mastermind here with his son, Giles. They’ve taken every bit of existing recorded Beatles material and twisted it — I believe “mashed up” is the new term — into a completely new presentation that every fan will need to have in their collections.

Some of the songs remain in their intact state, and some are merely tweaked. The majestic “Hey Jude,” for example, is shortened to good effect and made into a bit more of a rave up. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” however, is totally reborn from an unreleased demo and newly recorded strings which Martin brilliantly added. Ringo’s “Octopus’s Garden” and “Good Night” are laid on top of each other like a collage, with “Garden” getting a dramatic staging.

Martin is also clever adding in little bits of trivia. Since the Beatles were the first group to get fans playing records backwards for messages, he reverses “Sun King” from “Abbey Road” and calls it “Gnik Nus” as a transition into “Something.” And the “She Loves You” outro from “All You Need Is Love,” which was always an understated extra, now gets major emphasis.

Did I mention the sound? Most of the Beatles CDs were made by Martin in 1987 and never touched again. The “White Album” was re-equalized at one point, and “Yellow Submarine” was remastered for its DVD re-release, but most of it has remained the same … until now.

On “Love,” the sound is gorgeous and warm, clearly remastered. And the deluxe package comes with a DVD-Audio disc for home theater enthusiasts. A lot of fans may wind up switching their DVD players into their stereo systems just to hear this version. It’s that good.

leaving Las Vegas

Had a great couple of weeks in Vegas, being trained in the circus arts. Where else to learn but in the true Entertainment Capital of the World?

I saw the 5 awesome Cirque du Soleil shows currently playing and spent time backstage. As well, I observed two auditions and assisted my she-mentor Dana with evaluations.

It was an eye-opener! And a learning experience big-time.

If you want to know more, I post Cirque du Soleil notes on my gymnastics blog.

THANKS Dan & Terri, and Dana & Fred who hosted the perfect houseguest (… at some point in the past. This time it was me eating their food and drinking their booze.)

Next adventure?

Hiking Paria Canyon on the Arizona / Utah border. I plunge into the slot canyon Thursday Oct. 26th.

Woodward West Sport Camp, California

I coached 3 weeks at Woodward in 2005.

This summer I stopped in for 3 days, a goodwill ambassador from Cirque du Soleil.

It was great to get reacquainted with so many of the same coaches and camp staff from the previous year.

Woodward.jpg

Woodward West is a HUGE camp, half boys, half girls. They offer gymnastics and cheer, as well as some trampoline, tumbling and acrosport.

The Action Sports offered: BMX, mountain biking, skateboard and in-line skating.

It is one fantabulous place!

Indiana Hoser

I, Ricky Bobby, first visited Indianapolis (pop. 2 million) in 1991 for the World Gymnastics Championships and had a great time. This time I am here representing Cirque du Soleil at the USA Diving Championships.

White River State Park and the Zoo are sprawling green spaces adjacent to IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis)Dan Quayle is an alumni.

The Indiana University Natatorium is host of the Championships.

A lovely canal system winds through the parks near the venue.

Indianapolis is home to USA Diving, USA Gymnastics and the NCAA Headquarters. More important to Hoosiers is The Brickyard, home to the Indianapolis 500. (I am in town during the Allstate 400 at The Brickyard – the NASCAR Nextel Cup.)

The days of the Klan ruling ‘Naptown’ are long gone. But Indianapolis is back on the maplike Brockway, Ogdenville, and North Haverbrook — because they have a monorail.

It broke down during a heat wave, the day I arrived, cooking some hospital patients.

new – GymnasticsCoaching.com

I spun off a blog of interest to all coaches of acrobatic sports. Gymnastics and trampoline are fundamental to everything you do later in sports like diving and break dancing.

Go to my new blog for everything gymnastics.

Last summer at Woodward camp I coached high level mountain bikers, in-line skaters and skateboard punks. Their lack of skill on trampoline was shocking and dangerous.

Two gymnasts, the sons of former Olympian Phillip Chartrand, trained gymnastics one week — then switched to in-line skating for the next week. The in-line coaches told me they were instantly the best students due to their solid gymnastics background. Those boys were cast in the new Beatles Cirque show “LOVE”.

cycling – world’s longest line?

Did you happen to see Darren Berrecloth’s uninterrupted ride down a steep arid mountain ridge in Utah?

Very cool!

It first aired on Discovery Channel’s Stunt Junkies Feb. 1st, 2006. But I notice they are replaying that episode frequently where I live.

Darren

Berrecloth is widely considered to be the top mountain bike freerider on extremely steep and technical terrain.

From Discovery Channel:

Bike Magazine’s 2004 “Rider of the Year,” Canadian Darren “Bearclaw” Berrecloth has spent the last few years radicalizing the already extreme sport of freeride mountain biking. His signature spins, hand grabs and no-hands seat grabs have redefined the sport and earned him tons of accolades in the biking world.
