ChicoBag light weight travel pack

I carry this for shopping. Especially for cycling to the grocery store. US$29.99 on Amazon.

I bring it along when I travel to have easier options for short trips.

There are lighter packs, I should add. The ChicoBag does not fit in your pocket.

Why Hate the Koch Brothers?

If you hate GOP policies, you hate the Koch brothers. Right?

After listening to the Freakonomics interview with David Koch, I’ve now got mixed feelings.

Charles Koch, the mega-billionaire CEO of Koch Industries and half of the infamous political machine, sees himself as a classical liberal. So why do most Democrats hate him so much? In a rare series of interviews, he explains his political awakening, his management philosophy and why he supports legislation that goes against his self-interest.

Charles Koch

The list of charitable causes supported by Charles Koch, and his brother David, is long and diverse, and would surely find approval with even their most devout political enemies. David is particularly well-known in New York for funding the arts and medical research. Among the Koch Industries beneficiaries are the United Negro College Fund; Project JumpStart, which provides construction training; and the movement for criminal-justice reform.

He’s very smart. Very well read.

Why Hate the Koch Brothers? (Part 1)

Why Hate the Koch Brothers? (Part 2)

They want tax reform and want to roll back regulations. They don’t like idiot Jeff Sessions’ idiotic “war on marijuana”.

They are disappointed with GOP efforts to repeal Obamacare. They don’t like Trump.

They are for free trade. Against border-adjustment fees that Trump keeps trumpeting.

All that said, if you hate GOP policies, know that the Koch brothers do as much as anyone to ensure dinosaurs like Pence stay in office.

The network of conservative donors announced Saturday it plans to spend between $300 million and $400 million on politics and policy during the 2018 cycle. …

Koch network ramps up political spending while trying to push Trump team

On the other hand, some Koch donors are so pissed they want the “Koch network ‘piggy banks’ closed until Republicans pass health and tax reform.

cameras are dying

I tripped over to Walmart to purchase my 3rd Elf.

I like this camera. But they only last about a year before the telescoping lens fails.

The camera rack at a Burlington ONT Walmart was empty. The salesman told me they were getting out of camera sales. That’s not the only store.

Seems most people prefer to use their camera phones.

So … we rolled on over to Staples. They had plenty of different Elfs in stock. I chose the Elf 180 as it was least expensive.

my AirPods

I’ve cursed Steve Jobs 10,000 times for not perfecting wireless headphones.

The new Apple AirPods are good and bad.

The good? No wire tangles. They fit. They don’t fall out. Battery life is excellent. You can tap them to start and stop play.

The bad? Bluetooth is not 100% reliable. Audio cuts out quite often. There is no volume control without Siri. They are expensive at US $160. And … not everyone thinks they look cool wearing them. 🙂

Audio books and podcasts are important to me. I’ll get good value out of that $160 over the lifetime of the AirPods.

Still, I’ll normally use them in preference to my regular headphones.

The fit and sound exactly like Apple earbuds.

Good & Plenty licorice

Good & Plenty is a brand of licorice candy. …

London drops are a similar candy sold in Finland and Sweden.

I apologize to Good & Plenty, the oldest branded candy in the USA (1893).

In the past I claimed that Twizzlers Licorice Goodies — available only in Canada — were superior.

I’ve learned. I’ve changed. Both are equally good … in their own ways. 🙂

new backpack / briefcase

For Christmas I bought myself a National Geographic Appalachian 20 Inch Upright Rolling Suitcase. C$111.99 ($82.50)

Hidden backpack straps for off trail travel. I can wheel or carry. To save weight I cut off the side carry straps.

It (barely) still fits in an airplane overhead rack.

10 year warranty.

I like it. But was surprised it had no dedicated laptop sleeve. AND it’s fairly heavy.

The Good Wife – season 7

I just finished the 156th and final episode of The Good Wife.

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports a 100% fresh rating …

The finale episode of The Good Wife: “End” had a divided reaction among viewers and critics, with many praising a fitting ending to a complex character with others who argued of its ambiguity and absence of a conclusion – particularly with Alicia’s love life. …

I’ll be downloading the sequel – The Good Fight.

On The Media audiocast

On The Media is my favourite podcast.

WNYC’s weekly investigation into how the media shapes our world view. Veteran journalists Brooke Gladstone and Bob Garfield give you the tools to survive the media maelstrom.

The most recent episode  is super —  This is Not a Safe Space. It explores the issues of students feeling safe on campus and academic freedom of speech.

White male patriarchy results in bullying on campus for anyone who is not a white male. Something like 1/5 women will STILL be sexually assaulted in their College years.

We want all students to feel safe while simultaneously protecting freedom of speech. The two are not mutually exclusive.
