make presentations like Steve Jobs

I plunked down $80 for Apple iWork software. That’s Pages (Word), Numbers (Excel) and Keynote (Powerpoint).

Part of my master plan to de-Microsoft my life. This suite tries to replace Microsoft Office.

Recently I have been doing a LOT of computer presentations and my schedule does not look to be slowing down in 2008. Keynote is a little better than Powerpoint, but the two are very similar. As expected, Keynote is more FUN.

Mainly I have to avoid the temptation of using the many cool special effects. My presentations are minimalist.

Click PLAY to see Keynote in action or watch it on YouTube.

WordPress is top blogging platform

Problogger is a site for blogging experts.

Here are the results of a recent poll of their users:

… two varieties of WordPress being used by 51% of ProBlogger readers.

What Blogging Platform Do You Use? [POLL RESULTS]

This site runs on free WordPress.org software.

Rumours persist that WordPress.com will be acquired by someone, perhaps Yahoo!. Gladly the system is too good, too far evolved, to be ruined by anyone. Even Microsoft couldn’t destroy WordPress.

Urban Rail transit around the world

The caption reads: “This playful diagram shows all the cities which have, are building or are planning to construct an urban rail system. It is the opening page of a new book about the graphic design of subway, metro, underground and U-Bahn system maps and diagrams.”

Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

Super book, especially for anyone with a fondness for old comics. Kavalier & Clay are a “Czech artist named Joe Kavalier and a Brooklyn-born writer named Sam Clay—both Jewish—before, during, and after World War II.”

The writing is clean. Simple.

The plot fascinating and never predictable. I swear I could believe it was a true story.

Author Michael Chabon is widely considered one of the best working today. Though this book won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2001, that meant nothing to me. I got it as an MP3 from the library on recommendation from Downtown Ronnie. (Yes, he’s still alive, though almost 50 now.)

Unfortunately the audio was abridged. I want it all, so I plan to get the dead tree version as well.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

Highly recommended as a Christmas Festivus gift.

The most famous super hero of the fictional Kavalier & Clay was called “The Escapist”. In 2004 Chabon collaborated on turning the character into a real comic. Life imitated art.

Battlestar Galactica: Razor – strong women

The only two TV shows I follow religiously are The Colbert Show and Battlestar Galactica.

A 2hr flashback special called Razor aired recently. It goes on sale (somewhere) on DVD on the 6th.

I have some criticisms of Battlestar. (It’s “Hollywood” enough to have explosions make noise in the vacuum of space.)

But there’s no other TV show in history that has such strong, complex female characters. Women completely overpower the male actors.

Razor is the best yet. They should study it at film school.

Michelle Forbes plays unforgettable military psychotic Admiral Helena Cain:

bs1.jpg

Cain later made a name for herself as a smart and ambitious officer in the Colonial Fleet. She was something of a rising star: Commander William Adama later remarks that she was promoted “to Rear Admiral over half the Commanders on the list”.

Prior to the destruction of the Twelve Colonies, Cain’s flagship, the Battlestar Pegasus, was docked at the Scorpion Fleet Shipyards for a major refit. The refit team included a civilian network analyst, Gina Inviere, with whom Cain initiated a lesbian relationship. At the time of the attack, Admiral Cain, like many of her crew, was preparing to leave the ship on shore leave. The initial Cylon strike destroyed five Colonial vessels in Pegasus’ immediate vicinity and severely damaged the Pegasus herself, killing 700 crew members. In a desperate gamble, Admiral Cain ordered a “blind jump” that took the Pegasus out of the combat zone. The stress of losing so many crew members appears to have contributed to Admiral Cain’s later extreme behaviour and possible alcoholism.

Helena Cain

bs2.jpgEven more fascinating is Stephanie Chaves-Jacobsen, a Portuguese Chinese Norwegian English Aussie, born in Hong Kong. She has degrees in philosophy and English literature.

She plays Kendra Shaw, a smart, tough warrior ethically torn by the commands given by Cain. But who obeys. And who rises rapidly in the military hierarchy.

She numbs her pain with drugs.

OK, I want to buy this special as a download. …

Oops — NBC yanked it off iTunes in a pricing dispute. Oops — it’s not available on NBC.com …

Ah, NBC will make it available from Hulu.com … Oops — Hulu is in Beta, AND not available for Mac.

Oh, well. I don’t want to, but I can buy the DVD from NBC. Mail it as a Christmas gift to my empowered women friends.

Never mind, if NBC doesn’t want my business, I know how to get their product. Without all the roadblocks to commerce.

Do you see why I am so critical of old media?

This American Life – The Radio Lab

The top podcast on iTunes in recent days is This American Life. A repeat of the award winning radio show that you can download to listen to at your convenience.

Almost everyone has heard This American Life, somewhere, sometime. It’s awesome.

This American Life (TAL) is a weekly hour-long radio program produced by Chicago Public Radio. It is distributed by Public Radio International and is also available as a free weekly podcast. TAL, hosted by Ira Glass (cousin of composer Phillip Glass), is primarily a journalistic non-fiction program, although it has also featured essays, memoirs, field recordings, short fiction, and found footage.

A television program sharing the name and basic structure of the radio program airs on the Showtime cable network, and features Ira Glass as the host and executive producer. The first episode aired on March 22, 2007.

Similar, but even better, and far less well known, is WNYC’s Radio Lab. They have far fewer episodes too. Radio Lab is the future of audio entertainment, I think. Very innovative.

To check out these podcasts, listen on their home pages:

  • Or, far easier, search for them in the iTunes store if you use that software. (Surprisingly, the Zune store just added “podcasts”, as well.)

Banff Mountain Film Festival WORLD TOUR

    I love this event.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is on the road across North America and around the world. Whether you are an experienced mountaineer or an armchair adventurer, this event is for everyone. Don’t miss the excitement!

The Tour Schedule is linked from the home page – World Tour: Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre

The event sponsors are prominently mentioned — OK, it’s a commercial — in the second half of the video. But it’s still worth watching. This is the kind of TV commercial I like.

if Gmail had been designed by Microsoft

A humorous post laying out some of the reasons I am switching from Microsoft Hotmal to Google Gmail:

Today I want to ponder the question: what if Microsoft, not Google, had created Gmail? What would be the differences in that web mail client for users today? What if we apply some of the same design rules that brought us Hotmail, for instance?

What If Gmail Had Been Designed by Microsoft?

    5.png

The new Hotmail Live (or whatever it is called) is crappy.

But, to be fair, Gmail is not all that much better. No one has yet designed a web mail interface I like. Gmail is best of the worst.

Gmail has the best SPAM filter. That’s the main reason I will be switching.

    today I become a musician

My buddy Sam recently got into GarageBand, the music making software that comes free on every Mac.

Long have I promised myself I would make music myself. Starting today, I’m dedicating 2 weeks to becoming a musician. (Half hour each day).

That should be enough time to become a Brian Eno, ya think?

    garageband.jpg

Welcome to your personal recording studio — where it’s easy to make a song whether you’re a first-time musician or a seasoned pro. With GarageBand, you can create your own virtual onstage band and play along on your favorite instrument. You can record, edit, and mix a song exactly as you want it, in pristine CD quality. It’s the perfect place to get your act together.

    Apple

I’ll be starting with this free on-line seminar.

I hope to enter a battle of the GarageBands over Christmas. Then post my music here before going on tour. (Distribute the music free, make your money on the concert t-shirts — that’s the new model.)
